Wonderful 24 Mar 1999
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
As a volunteer at an animal shelter, I know firsthand what Elizabeth Hess is writing about. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to throw in the towel. The animals that I'm helping are what keeps me dedicated. If there were more people in this world like Elizabeth and myself, it would be a much nicer place to live in. I urge everyone to volunteer their time and money to such a worthwhile cause. It's extremely hard sometimes, but the happy endings make it all worth it. These animals are the products of ignorant and cruel people. To know that I make a difference in their lives enriches mine.

This book has convinced me to look into adopting my next dog rather than purchasing one from a breeder. I was hesitant to start the book thinking I would become too upset reading it. Though many of the individual animals stories were pathetic and made me angry, it forced me to rethink my plans for our next pet.

Anyone who is thinking of bringing a pet into their homes should read this book and then visit their local shelters.

I was given this book for my birthday because I am a real animal lover. I almost dreaded reading because I was afraid it would make me sad. But once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. I read it in 24 hours. I loved it. All animal lovers should read this. It is a celebration of the bond betweeen animals and people. It is fascinating to learn about the dynamics and politics of running an animal shelter. I am buying it for many on my Christmas list. It has been one the best books I have read this year!!!
