Product Description

At noon on 13th May, 1999, 22 year old Michael Matthews became the youngest Briton to climb Everest. Four hours later, he was alone & lost in the most dangerous places on earth. Bewildered and running out of oxygen, Michael would have known that he was about to die. His body was never found. He became the 162nd person to die on Everest. To some he was another experienced climber caught out of his depth but the other clients in Michael's team tell a different story. They claim the expedition was an accident waiting to happen.

Very disappointing 9 Mar 2010
I found this a most disappointing purchase. The blurb on the DVD sleeve says "high quality film shot during the 1999 expedition makes the viewer feel they too are witness to what happened. A combination of dramatic reconstructions, actual expedition footage and interviews with those who were there make a dramatic, powerful and compelling story of how one young man came to be alone in Everest's Death Zone". The expedition footage is merely one the climbers filming himself or Michael with his video camera (usually in their tent, there is certainly no footage of any climbing), the dramatic reconstructions are awful (grainy and not at all dramatic), and the interviews are limited to a few of the paying clients, no one from the expedition organisation are involved so you only get one side of the story.

A documentary, well written and plenty of food for thought. A very sad true story of someone who was literally left to die on this mountain. I would entertain very serious doubts about ever using the Company who organised this trip and even more doubts about the guides who left this young man to die there. Well worth watching and I really do feel for this young man's family and their struggle to find out the truth.

enjoyable 2 Mar 2010
An excellent DVD. Some wonderful photography. It brings home the realities of climbing Everest. The relationships, good and bad, come over and mistakes made reflect the summit fever that so often envelopes climbers. One of the best videos in this respect, no holes barred. Well worth watching - unless you have a relative or friend climbing the mountain!!
