This is a very disappointing book given the magical and fascinating story that it follows. Firstbrook gives an interesting and detailed description on the history of Everest and previous exepedtions in the beginning, but then the book tails off badly with very little about the actual discovery and detail of the find of Mallory. In fact the actual discovery is detailed in only one small part. Finally, the author presents a rambling, incoherent and unstructured view of whether Mallory & Irvine succeeded in the atttempt and bears no relation to all the further scientific evidence that was uncovered.

Somewhat false 21 Dec 1999
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Bearing in mind the fact that the author allegedly provided a number of problems for the team, not the least of which was his point blank refusal, in the face of medical advice, to leave the expedition due to altitude sickness, his book does ring a rather hollow tone. It is hardly sensible to put personal desires ahead of the greater need at the altitudes involved in an Everest expedition. To anyone considering purchasing this book I would suggest also buying "Ghosts of Everest" as well (preferably instead!) and make your own mind up.

Depressing 15 Dec 1999
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
It's depressing to see the BBC try and pass off something as an official book when it's obvious from the text of this book by the BBC production team that they really weren't there on the mountain. The first sections are interesting on the history, but after that it's downhill. You can't help getting the feeling that someone was trying to make mileage from this book...I would advise reading the LAST CLIMB or GHOSTS OF EVEREST if you want (1) the history or (2) the story of the team who found the body.
