I discovered John Prine by hearing the track "Ain't Hurtin' Nobody," on the radio twice in a week, and decided I had to seek out the track. A search with Amazon has revealed a classic album. There isn't a bad song on Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings. The CD opens with John Prine's looking to a life after this in New Train, singing "No melted ice cube in a paper cup/Hell you'll be so happy you'll be all shook up/The friends that greet you will be simple and plain/When you step down from that new train". The next song, "Ain't Hurtin' Nobody," is the best on the album, a classic by any standards, with Howie Epstein's walking bass and Benmont Tench's organ fills providing the backdrop. The opening lines are classic Prine: "I'm walkin' down the street/Like Lucky LaRue/Got my hand in my pocket/I'm thinkin' 'bout you/I ain't hurtin' nobody/I ain't hurtin' no one."
This CD, recorded in 1997 is timeless with a rocking sound, which is exemplified by "We Are the Lonely," with Howie Epstein's heavy bass and acoustic guitar. The lunatic mock personals at the end of the song are hilarious: "SWF with a PhD/Seeks TLC at the A&P." "Straight but curious 33/Seeks survivor of Wounded Knee." "Toothy gal with breasts so large/Takes Visa Amex Master Charge." "Ugly man treats girls like dirt/Wants buttons sewn upon his shirt."
The poetic "I love you so much it hurts" is John Prine at his best. Not to mention every song on Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings, I pause to single out the sprawling, mostly narrative "Lake Marie." It's a circuitous tale of the smaller of two lakes and involves, love and murder.

I came across John Prine back in the late 1990s when I kept hearing Ain't Hurtin Nobody on the local BBC radio station (Radio Foyle / Ulster). The use of words and the phasing were in my opinion superb and I just loved his voice. As a result I sought out this record from my local independant outlet at the time and obtained a copy on cassette (Remember them!), although I have since replaced this with a CD version. Listen through all the tracks here and I promise you will not be disappointed and the superb track 'Lake Marie' is the crowning glory of the album. Since then I have obtained several JP CDs, and whilst they are all good (With a few rare exceptions such as 'In Spite Of Ourselves') none has in my mind ever achieved the level of excellance that Lost Dogs & Mixed Blessings did. This is a great introduction. If you find this to your liking, seek out 'The Missing Years; Fair and Square and Souvenirs.

By his high standards , not one of his best but still pretty good all the same . Same Thing Happened To Me is maddeningly catchy and this is the one that includes Lake Marie , one of his masterworks and up there with Angel From Montgomery , Hello In There and Sam Stone as one of the great songs of the last forty years . I have played this time after time and can't work out how he does it - the verses are drawled and the chorus' sung - it intertwines Native Americans finding two lost little white girls with a grisly discovery of two bodies and the disintegration of a marriage - strangest of all in the accordion heavy air you can smell woodsmoke and the Italian sausages sizzzzzlin on the outdoor grill . Worth buying for this one track alone .

A GEM! John has his normal unusual way of looking at the world. Fine music. Great songs An album often overlooked in John's catalogue but an excellent addition to your collection.
