There's a huge number of local history books out there. But this one really is very good, and stands out. It is written in an easy and entertaining manner, yet packs in whacking great amounts of information. Lots of photos and illustrations too. Trails right back to the eleventh century and goes through to the twenty first century, so that really is a mighty amount to be squeezing to a single volume - yet this author does so very successfully. I am so pleased this book has at least preserved some knowledge of Devon's vast history, from the countryside farms, the churches and abbeys, the fishing villages, the industry... This isn't a chore to read, it's a pleasure.

Lost Devon by Felicity Goodall is a wonderful volume that will appeal to the Devon visitor or resident alike. It recaptures the history of the region with text, photographs and drawings in a really atmospheric way - the presentation of the book is very good. Of course, there have been a lot of changes over the centuries, but despite its title, this book also serves to show that a lot of Devon history has been preserved too and it adds a lot of extra interest/insight to places I've visited.

I'd be amazed if anyone with connections to Devon didn't find this a fascinating book both to read cover to cover as well as dip in and out of when visiting. Recommended.

What an extraordinary book! The seeming random choice of topics, so wide in scope, will serve as a guide to those wishing to delve more deeply into the history of this great county.
