An exciting desert adventure for reluctant readers - and those who just like a rattling yarn...,

This review is from: Lost in the Desert (Paperback)
Barrington Stoke publishes books aimed at struggling, reluctant and dyslexic readers. They pride themselves on books that hook you with a great story. Lost In The Desert is a worthy addition to their range. It tells the contemporary story of a boy called Max, who has been sent to a boot camp in Mongolia's Gobi Desert to sort out his bad behaviour. Max's guardians believe he wouldn't be foolish enough to flee into the desert on his own, but this is exactly what he does. The author understands the importance of food and animals in children's books and we get plenty of each. Upon learning that Max has an African grey parrot called Ace, one might be tempted to think about Kiki from the classic Adventure series. When we learn that Max has taught his parrot to swear, we realise we are no longer in Enid Blyton territory. This also highlights the author's mischievous sense of humour. This is a book that never talks down to its readers. The pace of Lost In The Desert is lean, with every ounce of fat trimmed away. There are enough details about the Gobi Desert to give the story authenticity. Readers will learn about dwellings called 'gers' and a foodstuff called 'urum'. There aren't pages of description for a reluctant reader to wade through, though I found the setting so fascinating I was keen to know more. Lost In The Desert contains plenty of action and drama to keep you turning the pages to the end. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a fast-paced adventure in an authentic and fascinating setting.
