A near perfect Wolfhounds Compilation. Highly recommended,
By A Customer
This review is from: Lost But Happy: the Wolfhounds 1986-1990 (Audio CD)
A comprehensive compilation of this London band that covers the period 1985-1990. Starts with the drifting 'Lost But Happy' which seemlessly drifts into the full on throttle that is 'L.A JUICE', which still sounds as manic today as the day it was recorded. Their biggest hit 'Anti-Midas Touch' still fills the dance floors of indie clubs to this day, and their other big indie hits 'Happy Shopper', 'Rent Act' and the sublime 'Son of Nothing' are also present. The best section of this compilation is easily the four tracks from their masterpiece 'Blown Away'. 'Rite of Passage' is indeed so, and 'Blown Away' soars like a kick boxing angel. 'Gutter Charity', 'Vertical Grave' and 'Magic Triggers' from 'Attitude' round of the album and the world is left to wonder what their next album would have sounded like. If you've got the singles, then this album nicely puts them onto CD for you. If you've never heard The Wolfhounds before then this is the perfect place to start.

some people have a habit of making great music throughout their careers while not being noticed (or, more to the point, being misunderstood or ignored) by the music press. i can think of three offhand; tim smith, cathal coughlan and dave callaghan.of these three mr callaghan first came to my attention via moonshake, whose excellent debut 'eva luna' was followed by the superb mini-album 'big good angel'. this is my first foray into wolfhounds' work and it doesn't dissapoint. while the style is different (more angular guitar work than samples and suchlike), th pace never flags and highlights comethick and fast. personal faves are 'happy shopper', 'non-specific song', 'tropic of cancer' and the slow burners of 'torture'and 'gutter charity'. despite a slightly nasal vocal style, i've a lot of respect for callahan's tales of materialism and decay, and the music accentuates the tawdry tales contained within. must see if i can get hold of the other hounds stuff

An excellent introduction to the Wolfhounds - but try to get hold of their other stuff if you can. This CD contains material from all of the band's albums, as well as singles and tracks from compilations. All the tracks here are excellent - but it should have been at least a double CD - there are so many more great songs available by them! Most of the songs are guitar based - often with complex double guitar lines, with excellent basslines and often innovative drumming. Singer Callahan tells stories of homelessness, rampant consumerism and other themes. But its the tunes that get you in the end - superb.
