This book provides a fascinating account of some of the great buildings that have been lost over time. Some were victims of war or natural disasters but the stories of some of the buildings deliberately demolished through stupidity, ignorance or greed are truly tragic.
But who should decide which buildings should be preserved and which should be demolished? In the introduction the author mentions calls from the public to have Park Hill in Sheffield pulled down. But, no! He, not being an ignorant pleb like the rest of us, knows better! Apparently this failed monstrosity with no architectural merit whatsoever must be saved because he considers it a "once idealistic and rather fascinating local authority housing complex". I suspect that Mr Glancey can afford to live elsewhere!
Anyway, ignore the author's opinions, confine yourself to the facts and "if you have tears prepare to shed them now"!
