I bought this book after wanting to read about the history of Bristol, having lived there for two years. From reading the first page I was hooked - the book is written in such an easy to read way and has so many interesting facts that I couldn't put it down! What I liked best about it was, that after walking around the city for over two years and knowing street names etc, finding out the history and reasoning behind them, e.g. Temple Meads, the churches, Castle Park etc really gives you an appreciation of this great city. I couldn't recommend this book more - if you live in Bristol it's a must read.

I visited Bristol last week for what was perhaps the fourth or fifth time and I saw a side to it I had never seen before; the nice part!

After visiting some of the historic places in this old city I was inspired to learn more about it and it was in a Bristol bookshop I found 'Lost Bristol'

The book is just over 200 pages, including pictures, and doesn't include all of Bristol's ancient and colourful history (to do that it would have to be 2000 pages) but it does mention the major, significant events and locations of the city including the Redcliffe Caves, Queen Square, the slave trade, pirates, the civil war, Clifton suspension bridge and, of course, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. All of these subjects are written with a surprising and delightful amount of humour (for a history book) in a clear, concise way without drowning the reader in unnecessary information.

The book is charming and well written and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone with an interest in Bristol or, indeed, cities in general.
