An intriguing insight into the reality of the War in Iraq,
By Neil (UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Losing Arab Hearts and Minds: The Coalition, Al Jazeera and Muslim Public Opinion (Hardcover)
This book is a fascinating read and gives an insiders view of how the the US and its Coalition partners have missed countless opportunities to positively influence Arab public opinion with regards to the second War in Iraq. Its gives an eye-opening account of just how much of the information and "news" that we recieve in the West, and US in particular, is filtered, "spun" and subject to government influence. It takes an unbiased position and highlights the different roles that the media have adopted in the US, UK and the Middle East, and exposes the deficiences and short comings of the Coalition attitude towards the Arab media. This book has made me think differently about ALL the news we are shown and I would highly recommend it.

MEDIA AND IRAQ,
By
This review is from: Losing Arab Hearts and Minds: The Coalition, Al Jazeera and Muslim Public Opinion (Hardcover)
This is an excellent insider's account of the role of the Arab and Western media in the 2003 Iraq conflict. Whilst undoubtedly sympathetic to the Arab view point, it is well balanced and critical of both media and government policies.
This is another book that raises a 'What If?' over Iraq - this time what if the Coalition had put more effort into gaining the support of the Arab media rather than nurturing its own generally supportive press. On the minus side, the book would have benfited from more rigorous editing to remove some repetition and correct minor mistakes but this should not take away from this outstanding first book by Mr Tatham. This should be read by anyone interested in the media and Arab affairs.

An great insider's look at the Gulf War,
By Paul (Virginia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Losing Arab Hearts and Minds: The Coalition, Al Jazeera and Muslim Public Opinion (Hardcover)
This is a very interesting and easy to read book written by an Officer in the British Armed forces who was actually there during the war in Iraq and not by some historian or academic. I bought the book primarily because I keep hearing a lot about the Al-Jazeera TV company in the news and wanted to better understand the difficulties that some governments have with it, having had little personal exposure to it previously (It is always easier to parrot what other opinions are prevelant). This book opened my eyes, and made me reconsider the channel and about the ideology of the US Administration towards the press. It has challenged a lot of my preconceptions and I shall pay closer attention to all news networks (Both Arabic and Non Arabic) in the future when it comes to issues in the Arab world. It is better to make reasoned judgments with all available information and not a one sided (propaganda) view.
This book is not about the rights or wrongs of the war, and really it is not even about the actual war itself. It is more about the way that the British and American governments could improve relations in this part of the world by better conveying the true intentions and the sincere desire for peace that the average person in the West wants. It comes across as well balanced and researched (not a "he said, she said") with common sense recommendations that promotes better understanding.
