Like an encyclopedia

If there could be a wikipedia on logos, this must be it. The entire series -- Los Logos: Compass is the fifth edition -- runs like an encyclopedia of logo designs, tracking trends and the most cutting-edge examples. I was immediately engaged by this excellent compilation of advertising, branding, identity and emerging digital design work. Educational, obviously, but more importantly: fun to flip through.

Wow! Packed to the max, this fifth edition of the Los Logos series contains a ridiculous amount of information and logos but comes this time organized by smart categories such as "pre-school" and "ornamental". It also argues for a renaissance of the more detailed and hand-drawn aesthetic, a return to authenticity in design. These logo books are all must-have resources in my mind, but Compass is obviously the most recent (and relevant). But it's also the most comprehensive. I'm impressed.

I first got into Gestalten's books when I saw the second Los Logos book (Dos Logos) in Paris. This one is even better though. Sure, it's bulkier and looks different next to the other four on my bookshelf. But now I know why: It's one you can learn a lot from too! Lots of handy tips for logo designers and companies on how to design your logo and what it should say about you. A great addition to the rest of the series, and they haven't let me down yet.
