Product Description

CD Description

A special new edition of L'Arpeggiata's phenomenally successful album, Los Impossibles (which has sold 40,000 copies worldwide), featuring The King's Singers and including four tracks never previously released on CD, one of them a cover version of the famous standard 'Caravan'.

In Los Impossibles, Christina Pluhar and her ensemble L'Arpeggiata explore the early and traditional music of Spain, Portugal and Latin America in search of a common thread linking the many different styles and periods. Such a link was found in Los Impossibles - a piece discovered in Mexico within a manuscript composed by the Spanish Baroque guitarist Santiago de Murcia in the early 18th century. This piece is a romanesca of the kind found in Italy, Spain and Portugal from the 16th century onwards. Says Pluhar: "The whole project became an exciting journey across continents and centuries".

Featuring the Grammy award-winning British vocal ensemble, The King's Singers (Simple Gifts won the Best Classical Crossover Album). They perform Villancico catalan - a wonderful folksong from Catalonia, specially arranged by Goff Richards for the six voices of the King's Singers.

"Hats and wigs off, then, to Christina Pluhar's Saturday programme Los Impossibles, featuring her gutsy group L'Arpeggiata, the King's Singers (so ebulliently suave), and Anna Dego's dancing feet. We clapped and clapped. We joined in singing. The only thing we didn't do was dance in the aisles - always treacherous in the QEH." - Geoff Brown, The Times

Surprise 20 Jun 2011
By Mariana
Format:Audio CD
I bought this item because I have bought another Cristina Pluhar's CD. I thought I was buying again an erudite music CD. That is not the case. But as all Cristina Pluhar's work it is a very good one. You have ancient music from Portugal (17th century, very very good) and from Spain. But also modern music. The instruments are old, and beautiful. I love the trumpet (Barroque).

This recording is a true masterpiece. The Spanish influence is full of latin temperament. I recommend this CD to anyone. Buy this CD, you won't regret it.

A wonderful album from a wonderful ensemble! 28 May 2010
By Buck Bauer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is NOT a totally new album. It is a re-release of the 2006 album of the same name, but with four additional tracks of music. It may or may not include the unadvertised DVD of some of the recording sessions, with commentary by Christina Pluhar, that was included with the original version. To read more reviews of the original version, go back and search the music category for this album, by name, and both versions will appear, until Amazon figures out what's going on.

You can also hear samples there!

Here's my review, of the original album:

First, a few words about the ensemble, L'Arpeggiata, from their "myspace" page:

"Arpeggiata is a baroque music ensemble directed by the harpist and lute player Christina Pluhar [pictured on the cover]. Its members are today's finest instrumentalists and in addition they work with the most exceptional singers from the Baroque and the traditional music worlds.

"Arpeggiata's work and philosophy is based on improvisations on the music of the 17th century, a rich sound texture by blending all colours of various plucked instruments from the baroque period, a vocal interpretation influenced by traditional Italian music."

Stringed instruments plucked, strummed, bowed, and hammered, they're all there, and wind instruments sometimes appear, with great effect. Guest vocalists on this album are the famous King's Singers.

This beautiful album, recorded in 2006, is the best thing since L'Arpeggiata's previous album "All'Imrovviso," recorded two years earlier. Listen to the samples here. You'll learn more about the music that you would from any written description.

It's too bad there are no such samples for "All'Imrovviso." Buy both albums now, and you won't regret it!

The copy of Los Impossibles I just received from Amazon contained the CD, as well as a 32-minute DVD featuring extensive commentary by music director Christina Pluhar, and recording sessions for four tracks on the album: 1. Sã qui turo, with the King's Singers, and Doron Sherwin playing the cornetto; 7. Bastião, with the King's Singers; 2. Jácaras, with master flamenco guitarist Pepe Habichela, and over the closing credits 10. La Dia Spagnola. There are also two bonus tracks, with music and still photos.

weru.org music programer 30 Jan 2011

Everyone of Christina Pluhar's albums is worth having. Of the currently available, the two that are at the top of my list are "All'Improvviso" and "Los Impossibles". I do a radio show, "Come Sunday" on weru.org, and have received an incredible number of positive calls from listeners all across the country when I have played selections from those two CD's!
