In Los Impossibles, Christina Pluhar and her ensemble L'Arpeggiata explore the early and traditional music of Spain, Portugal and Latin America in search of a common thread linking the many different styles and periods. Such a link was found in Los Impossibles - a piece discovered in Mexico within a manuscript composed by the Spanish Baroque guitarist Santiago de Murcia in the early 18th century. This piece is a romanesca of the kind found in Italy, Spain and Portugal from the 16th century onwards. Says Pluhar: "The whole project became an exciting journey across continents and centuries".
Featuring the Grammy award-winning British vocal ensemble, The King's Singers (Simple Gifts won the Best Classical Crossover Album). They perform Villancico catalan - a wonderful folksong from Catalonia, specially arranged by Goff Richards for the six voices of the King's Singers.
"Hats and wigs off, then, to Christina Pluhar's Saturday programme Los Impossibles, featuring her gutsy group L'Arpeggiata, the King's Singers (so ebulliently suave), and Anna Dego's dancing feet. We clapped and clapped. We joined in singing. The only thing we didn't do was dance in the aisles - always treacherous in the QEH." - Geoff Brown, The Times
