Product Description

Product Description

In the land of Hollywood, gang wars and beach bums, Los Angeles graffiti teems with the city’s myriad cultural influences. From intricately tagged walls that seem to grow out of blooming roadside flower beds to spray-painted palm trees, Los Angeles Graffitiillustrates how the landscape of America’s anti-city has fomented a distinct brand of graffiti, recognized the world over. Compiled by Roger Gastman, author of Freight Train Graffiti and co-founder (with Shepard Fairey) of Swindle magazine, this colorful book benefits from Gastman’s long-term, intimate involvement with L.A. graffiti writers. Recruiting friends and graffiti legends, like SABER and RETNA, Los Angeles Graffiti documents the history of the unique, world-class graffiti scene that thrives in Los Angeles. In particular, the interview with L.A. graffiti luminary POWER breathes history into these photographs of work created by the famous, infamous, and anonymous.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what you expect., 5 Jan 2010

This review is from: Los Angeles Graffiti (Hardcover)
After getting this book for Christmas, I was quite excited as I was expecting a book that follows on from the History of LA Graffiti, with features all the big names in LA, but unfortunately I was a bit let down as the book mainly features on the artists from the MSK crew, most prominently Revok, Rime & Sever, which is OK (although not my preferred taste in pieces). It is a decent enough book though just quite misleading with the title.

It only get's 4 stars. The book does not cover to many crews in La.Maybe like 3 to 4.Don't get me wrong, their are some great photo's in here. But my choice would be.Get the other LA graffiti books. They are more well rounded and give you a better over view of what's going on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Graffiti as an Art Form, 11 Aug 2007
By Grady Harp - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Los Angeles Graffiti (Hardcover)
"Graffiti is and will always be highly illegal.....graffiti inspires its legions to take risks and dedicate everything to the lifestyle." So opens the fine introduction by Roger Gastman followed immediately with an Interview with POWER, Founder of Can Control which capsulizes almost every aspect answering the question 'why graffiti?. This lavishly illustrated and designed book spends the rest of its pages with images of graffiti from throughout the Los Angeles Basin: this is a study in visual expression, in the multi-Ethnic culture that is Los Angeles, and ultimately an homage to the creators of the inner city murals that speak loudly about life in our times.

Although the word introductions to the book are informative, the subsequent lack of words throughout the book forces the reader to examine each image and ask questions of that image which at times a re apparent and at equal times occult. But the joy of LOS ANGELES GRAFFITI is the lushly colorful, sensitively designed pages that allow the graffiti to stand solidly as an art form. Few books on the subject can match the quality of photography, the sensitive color reproduction, or the vast amount of visual information the way this book does. It is a book about an outsider art, about protest, about territories, and about beauty - a book that should be in every library in the sociology section and every art library about significant contemporary art. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, August 07
