Product Description

One of the great love stories of English literature is retold in this powerful television adaptation, directed by Andrew Grieve (Hornblower) and starring Clive Owen (Children of Men), Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings), Polly Walker (Rome) and Billie Whitelaw (Napoleon and Love). Based on R.D. Blackmore's classic novel set during the turbulent times of King Charles II, the production tells of John Ridd, a young West Country yeoman whose father has been killed by the Doones a clan of aristocratic but murderous outlaws inhabiting a neighbouring valley. John's search for vengeance is complicated by his feelings for Lorna, a daughter of the Doone clan; behind the romance and adventure lie the richer themes of retribution and forgiveness, as John is ultimately able to heal the scars left by the killing of his father through his love for Lorna.

childrens classic 17 Feb 2011
By Sine
A film for all the family especially if they have read the book. The life lived in the hills seems a little romantic but the photography does justice to the beautiful surroundings.Carver Doone is as bad as he should be,Lorna as lovely.John Rudd could have been taller and stronger if he were the wrestler he was in the book,he came over as a confident and organised saviour. An enjoyable film for all, perhaps not bloodthirsty teenagers!

It's OK but not great 14 Jan 2012
By Anake
I read Blackmore's novel some 20 years ago and I was fascinated, but I have to admit, this adaptation does not do the story justice. I didn't find the characters fully developed and thus I thought they lacked conviction - I just didn't see the motivation behind what they did. It was interesting to see oh so very young Clive Owen and Sean Bean, but the latter didn't have much material to work with, unfortunately. I watched parts one and two, and then let some two weeks pass before I finished, because it didn't seem that compelling.

Have tried to find this ever since I began replacing videos with DVDs, never realised it had been a TV series. Nice to be able to complete the Bean collection ... To date at least.
A good retelling of the story.
