Synopsis
In yet another film adaptation of R.D. Blackmore's swashbuckling romance, this excellent and lavish BBC production of 'Lorna Doone' brings the classic tale of revenge and family warfare to life with a sterling cast. Filmed in Wales, the epic family saga begins in 1675, during a turbulent time in history when insurgence against the Catholic King James II, of England and Scotland, runs rampant. The fierce Doone clan has galloped into a farming village, murdering the village's protector, the father of young John Ridd. Determined to avenge his father's death, the teenager goes into the Doone Valley where he meets the independent but vulnerable Lorna Doone - ward of the clan leader, Ensor Doone - who was kidnapped as a child. Meeting again years later, the two fall in love. Ridd is steadfast in nobility of spirit, but Lorna has been unwillingly engaged to her cousin, Ensor's evil, and sadistic heir, Carver. Carver displays a kind of sad obsession for Lorna, but at the end of the day he is as murderous as they come. As their love grows, Ridd finds a new reason to pursue his campaign against the villains that have long dominated his world, and protecting Lorna becomes equal to revenge. Lorna, however, may not be quite what she seems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality adaptation from the BBC, 26 April 2006
By S. Morris (Rural Cheshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Adapting as good a novel as this is never easy but the BBC did very well.
Richard Coyle, in a serious role for a change, plays John Ridd exceptionally well despite the fact that John Ridd is supposed to be a giant of a man!
Amelia Warner is also excellently cast as the "English Rose" heroine Lorna.
Those unfamiliar with the story will dare not pause the DVD until the very end, due to the gripping storyline.
Those, like myself, whom are lifelong fans of R D Blackmore will remain impressed throughout with the high quality of acting, locations and camera work. The musical score also works well.
Thoroughly recommended for viewers of all ages and particularly those who might find the book a bit long.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful, 8 April 2006
By A Customer
This is a wonderful adaptation of the classic work as we have come to expect from the BBC adaptations. Richard Coyle is excellent as John Ridd, romantic and fierce and Amelia Warner is a beautiful, sweet Lorna. However, the star of the piece without question is Aidan Gillen, a fabulous and totally underrated Irish actor, who is a perfectly frightening Carver Doone. Also, it is interesting to see James Mc Evoy in one of his earliest roles as he is now established as one of Britain's rising stars.
