I was pretty excited about this game, it looked really decent although I was a bit sceptical at first. Lords of the Fallen still looked promising. A game in the vein of dark souls with it's own twists and design, it had me quite interested. Is this game any good and does it hold up?

Personally, I think the game is not that great. It has a pretty good concept and some nice designs but overall the execution is fairly poor and I cannot recommend it in this state. First of all let me say that this game has an atrocious performance and runs almost always lower than 30 frames per second which is totally not acceptable and hinders the smoother combat severely. The graphics are good but not that goundbreaking to warrant such a bad performance. Furthermore the game is bug ridden and crashes fairly often, the devs have released 2 patches since release which fixed some basic issues but it is still pretty bad in this state. Although pc already got 4 patches!

Let's talk about the story, I think they created a neat fantasy universe. Sure, it is generic at times but it is still decent. I like the premise of a god that has been defeated by men and yearns to return and revenge himself on the humans who cast him out. Do not expect anything great though in terms of dialogues or cutscenes, they are serviceable and nice changes from the combat and exploration. The dialogues and voice acting is somewhat stiff and leaves a lot to be desired, especially the transitions between gestures and actual talking. But it is all serviceable and the lore is quite neat.

The graphics are actually not that bad but like I said, if the devs cannot fix this framerate issue with a patch. It is simply not worth it. The atrocious framerate makes it hard to actually enjoy the game and the scenery.

2.0 out of 5 stars Looks like a Ferrari, handles like a Fiat 18 Nov 2014
Platform for Display:PlayStation 4|Verified Purchase
- Visually very impressive; think diablo, but 3d
- (Some) Boss fights are challenging and original, with changing attack patterns.
- Combat feels satisfying; strong feeling of weight and force when hitting enemies with heavy weapons
- Large number of weapons (few) with special attacks
- Many different armour sets, which look really cool

- MANY MANY bugs; the game was released unfinished. I encountered many game breaking bugs (PS4) and wasn't able to complete the game as a result.
- The game is very, very short (about 20% the length of dark souls, roughly 6 hours)
- Limited enemy types
- ALOT of back tracking... there's basically 2 (admittedly large) areas, far too much going through same places, killing the same enemies.
- No map/quest markers. Cannot even see current objective in menu - have to wait for it to randomly pop up on screen. You will spend a lot of time aimlessly wandering back and forth. No map/markers is (presumably) the developers choice in order to improve realism. The problem is that the level design is confusing and counter intuitive, with no logical progression or direction (unlike dark souls/ dark souls 2)
- Magic system is very limited and poorly done - 4 basic spells per class, animation/spell effects ugly and unimpressive. Half the spells are near useless, and one (cleric - shelter) overpowered (health regen, makes game very easy).
- Story is very dull and poorly explained. No substance behind any NPCs, no emotional connection to any of them, and none of their motives well explained. Audio notes scattered around (think story scrolls from diablo 3) seem like a lazy after thought.

1.0 out of 5 stars Frustrating to the max 20 Dec 2014
Platform for Display:PlayStation 4|Verified Purchase
This game is REALLY frustrating. Your view is hampered constantly by what feels like very blurry tunnel vision. I don't know why developers do this but Destiny did a similar thing it is where they put a blurry kind of double image at the edges of the screen. Kind of like looking at 3D without 3D glasses on. Have a look for yourself if you have the game or on Youtube but you can actually see a second red image offset from the original at the sides of the screen. Why in gods name they wanted this I have no clue because it looks horrid.

I have done some research and figured out what the blurry edges are. They are caused by an effect called Chromatic Aberration. This is a common feature created in photography and has something to do with how the light is diffracted through a camera lens. It is an effect which in photography is not desired and it actually REMOVED from photos. Yet for some reason the developers of this game decided to implement it into their game on purpose. I mean seriously? Is that where we are now with games? Graphics are so important to the small minded gamers of this generation that developers are adding ugly stupid effects to their games on purpose?

The problem is you don't look straight at the centre of the screen at all times. You look at the edges of the screen when looking at the UI, which means I feel like I'm going cross eyed every time I glance at the user interface and icons around the edges.

Also there is a considerable amount of motion blur in this game when you move the camera around making you not want to move the camera at all.

Overall the entire game looks blurry and muddy instead of how it should be which is crystal clear. I am not bothered by graphics in games but this is way too much.
