4.0 out of 5 stars A must for the Realms oriented DM, 25 Oct 2001
By Sean Goddard-chase "Brother Bear" (Melbourne, Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Okay, finally a book which is pretty comprehensive in its overview of the best and worst bad guys of the Realms. Your old favorites like the Black Network (aka the Zhentarim) and the Red Wizards of Thay are here, and also the new bad guys on the scene, the returned Archwizards of the Netheril Empire. The book has split the bad guys into two camps, the major ones like the Red Wizards and the Zhentarim, whose influence and power threatens the whole of Forgotten Realms, and the minor players, such as the Fire Knives or the Night Masks, whose main area of influence is more localised.

I think that this is a good idea as it allows for DMs to have a plethora of baddies to throw at any group of adventurers, from your beginning just left the family business to seek fame and fortune group, to the saving the world and laughing death in the face heroes of ballads and legends.

It also allows players to belong to these groups, and to find out why they are so feared throughout the Realms, and why the likes of Elminster, the Harpers and the Lords Alliance have such trouble getting rid of the Rotters.

The book includes the political structure and influence of each group, the hierachies, the groups agenda for themselves and others, notable allies and enemies, important bases and player hooks.

All in all a good all rounder, well presented and definitely a welcome edition to the Forgotten Realms.

5.0 out of 5 stars Evil organisations of Faerûn, 28 Jun 2007
By T. R. Alexander (East Anglia, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This supplement for the Forgotten Realms campaign setting details the evil organisations, both large and small, that operate in Faerûn. The book includes information on seven major organisations and twenty minor ones, all evil and many influential in the daily life of Faerûn. As well as groups, such as the Red Wizards and Zhentarim, the book also includes information on evil religions such as the churches of Bane and Cyric, and races like the Drow and Mind Flayers who wish to conquer and/or destroy Faerûn. Each entry has a brief description of the organisation and history of the group detailed as well as such things as approximate numbers, symbols and hierarchy. As well as this many of the entries have guidance for the use of the group by the DM, as well as sample encounters and layout for places frequented by the organisations. Altogether, although the book is relatively old now and some of the organisations detailed have advanced from how they are described in this book it would still be useful to a DM and is interesting enough to read through even if you don't use much of it in your game.
