I bought this after looking through it in a shop in town and thought it would be helpful. After an extra half an hour flick through it isn't.

What this is a more indelth guide to each race / class, and IS NOT A QUEST guide in any way. It has a nice amount of detail regarding the main game, char creation, classes etc and has maps for the current playing areas but that's it. No info on mobs, quests etc... However THAT info is advertised in and upcoming "World companion" to be released soon...KA-ching cash in time :(

So if you want help choosing your path get this...but for more in depth details get the next guide.

Ade.

This book has none of the details you are looking for, do not buy it. I bought my copy safe in the knowledge I would soon be able to gloat to my friends on all the special secrets. This book has guides on how to play each class, only problem being I'd worked them out for myself. Aside from that it has a 1/3 of the book devoted to the crafting vocations, but even that is incomplete (for example no stats on what the damage of woodworker bows are). The maps are a nice idea but a little small and blurry, and there is NO questing information at all. Finally it is outdated by the new patch, lacking many basic areas and upgrades.
Stick to looking up info on supporting websites!

Thats about all there is to say. The crafting guide is now obselete, the maps are useful only if you're starting out or if you need to finish an explorer deed. The trait guides are really lacking in detail and the skill guides are now completely outdated. However there are so many gaming sites that will tell you that for free it makes this guide completely pointless.

If you're new to MMO's then it might be worthwhile to help you choose your class, but to be honest the best way to do that is to pick one you find interesting and play it - given the updates to the game, it's made this guide a complete waste of time and money.

This is a very good game with a lot of detail to keep the Tolkien fans happy. The game play is quick and fun. The style does seem to come from WoW, but there is a game with a great following, maybe using a similar style will help. Questing is fun and at parts you are taken into movie based version where you have to make a difference to the story. Your result will have an effect on how you see the world around. Where other players may see builds, you may see burnt out versions. Very good.

Lacking 21 Jun. 2007
By Koala1356 - Published on Amazon.com

Overall, this book seems unfinished, as if it was rushed to release to coincide with the release of the game. Sports decent crafting and character guides for planning your professions and class, but the atlas section severely lacks. Many maps do not have any notations at all, or inadequate notations, which makes them next to useless when you are looking for a mob/mob boss, area, or point of interest. My advice: Wait for the 'revised and updated' edition.

this book is bad - won't help you get ahead at all 28 April 2007

the manual that arrived with the game was more informative than this sad book. there are NO QUEST descriptions and doesn't even explain destiny points. the artwork is fuzzy from bad blowups of ingame screen shots. don't waste your money on this one. very disapointing

Good Atlas, Lacking in Quest Help 30 May 2007
By Richard Powell - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Overall, a decent buy. I was expecting more help with quests and the like. It provides excellent strategy for every class, race, and crafting profession as well as detailed maps for every region of the game (at the time of launch).

You would be better off looking up the information online as the game is changing very quickly. The guide will be outdated by Fall 2007.

A Basic Helper only 16 July 2007
By John McCarthy - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This book is basic, as others have said. It's a good source for gamers just starting to play LOTRO, or entering regions for the first time.

I find it useful for the maps and craft and class quests. Sure there are online sites with more in-depth information and more detailed maps. Do a google search and make your pick. But unless you have a second computer or monitor (The game in full view is too awesome to shrink) next to you, the book maps are a decent reference, especially when first entering a region for the first time. The game map is empty, only showing where you are and some adjacent locations. The book gives you cities and landmarks.

As far as quest and boss locations, isn't that part of the discovery fun? Okay, okay, not always, and that's where online references can offer cheats to get past those sticky situations.

LOTR is an awesome game. Just starting the game? This book is very useful to you. Otherwise, as others have said, you may want to wait for a new edition. Of course by the time that happens will that be of any use to the veteran LOTRO user?

This book is awesome - yes, game has changed, but most info is perfect! 28 Jan. 2011

I don't get the complainers about the book. YES, IT IS A BIT OUTDATED, since it does not cover the Warden and the Rune-Keeper classes and the newest stuff, BUT it covers just about everything else. Maps are very useful to to level 50! It really helped me develop a battle strategy and all that.

I give this book under the newest update (Siege of Mirkwood) a 89% or a B-!! Get it if you are a beginer, you will get a lot out of this book for a very low price! :)
