Amazon.co.uk Review

Believe it or not, there are some Tolkien fans that don't like the Peter Jackson movies, and for them in particular this GBA version of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is perfect, since it's based on the book alone. Much like its home console brethren, the game covers the first book in Tolkien's trilogy, starting with Bilbo's leaving party and then centring on his nephew Frodo as he attempts to take the One Ring to Mount Doom where it can be destroyed-–although, as with the book, the story ends on the banks of the river Anduin. Of particular interest is the fact that the game includes the various sections from the book that the movie left out, including fan favourite characters such as Tom Bombadil.

The game itself is a role-playing game viewed from an isometric perspective. Although you start off controlling Frodo you can eventually add all nine members of the fellowship to your party and switch between controlling any one of them at any time. Combat is, in the Japanese style, turn-based, which does at least allow all of your characters to fight onscreen at the same time.

Although it manages to simulate the world of Middle Earth fairly well, this game is not without its faults. There are numerous bugs, the animation of the characters makes combat sometimes painfully slow, and too much of the book's dialogue is unnecessarily truncated. Still, if you're a Tolkien fan and you've finished reading the books on the bus to work, you could do worse than try the game instead. --David Jenkins

Product Description

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is a single player lite-RPG where the player follows the storyline of the first volume of J.R.R. Tolkien's saga. Throughout the game, the player will have control over the Fellowship members, at times controlling up to nine characters at once. This title is considered a lite-RPG since it will streamline the usual number-crunching found in most RPGs and simplify it to a more action-oriented, quick-paced format. Combat is turn-based, like most RPGs, but will provide a default AI that will control character actions if the player so chooses.

Gameplay will take place across a vast area based on the Middle-earth locations from Tolkien's books. Backgrounds will be beautifully realistic and faithful to Tolkien's descriptions, created from 3D models with rendered shadows. A semi-linear structure will allow the player to explore and experiment while still experiencing the narrative events of the books, allowing the game to be open to greater possibilities while still remaining faithful to the story.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, 9 Oct 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (GBA) (Video Game)
'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring' RPG video game for the Nintendo GBA is somewhat fun and addictive. The graphics are very detailed, the music (score) is pretty good, and there is twenty plus hours of gameplay which makes the game all the more worth buying and playing. The combat system in this RPG game is turn-based which is fun, but a bit slow. The plot in the game follows author J.R.R. Tolkien's brilliant story very well! The only cons this game has is: the combat system is slow (as I have already mentioned before) and there is some pointless exploring to do throughout the lands in Middle-earth. All in all, 'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring' RPG video game for the Nintendo GBA is a great game for true fans of author J.R.R. Tolkien's world. If you aren't a true fan of Tolkien's world, then I do not recommend you buy this game.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sooo Precious?, 14 Mar 2003
This review is from: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (GBA) (Video Game)
Well when i recived this game as a christmas gift i was thrilled, i love a good RPG and tolkein is the king. Well it took a while to get into and after a bit of pointless plot setting in the shire involving picking up random articles (e.g - which type of shire weed do you want?!) the adventure (finally) begins. The combat system is hit and miss really its pretty much wolves (or wargs) to start with but soon it builds up to goblins orcs and trolls (Which take ages to kill) typical rpg set up. The hobbits are rubbish at fighting and legolas and aragorn are usually the only people who can actually hit the harder monsters.
It is a great game and very true to tolkein's world, however there is a bit too much random wandering and picking up random things for this game to be excellent, and the combat takes ages (oh and gandalf has 2 rubbish spells). If your a tolkein fan you'll like it (hence the three stars), if your after an innovative rpg sorry but this is not worth it, buy breath of fire instead! Oh and the game seems to end when you meet the Balrog without any explanation that the game has ended!

Reasons to Buy

Great graphics
Traditional rpg gameplay
Very true to Tolkeins world

Reasons to Avoid

Rubbish combat system (the hobbbits are the worst)
Too much walking around without any purpose
Easy puzzles
Gandalf's lack of spells!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lord Of The Games, 31 Oct 2002

This review is from: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (GBA) (Video Game)
The Lord Of The Rings: Felloeship Of The Ring, game is an accurate portrayal of middle-earth as visioned by J.R.R Tolkien it plays well and allows exploration so even if you have read the books and seen the film, it won't be an easy task. The graphics are good considering it is on the GBA, and the fighting system is inventive and easy to use, i would recomend this game for Lord Of The rings fans and any RPG fans.
