A special edition of the greatest book of all time (as soon to be voted on BBC's the Big Read) accompanied by a set of SideShow Weta bookends. But is this boxed set worth the money, or would you be better saving your money for the next 'extra special' version of the films on DVD?
Lets start with the book. Well, what can I say that hasn't already been said about this magnificent trilogy. It is unique and intricately structured down to the minute detail, with the story in many parts taking a backseat to the creation of the wonderment of the realm in which it is based, Middle Earth. Nobody before or since Tolkien has so succesfully transferred a world, with it's people, history, geography and mythology into written form, and this is where the true brilliance of the book shines through. On top of this you have the sometimes sweet, scary, rousing but always riveting story of the fellowship and their struggle against the prospect of oppression and death from the ever expanding shadow of Mordor.
Okay some people are not going to find the book an easy read due to its size and the scope of Middle Earth mythology that it encompasses, but those who persevere with it will find themselves increasingly wrapped up in the richness of the story and the plight of the characters.
In keeping with the quality of the book the bookends are also extremely impressive. Anybody who bought the Fellowship of the Rings or Two Towers collectors box sets will already know of the quality of the SideShow Weta collectables and the bookends are no exception. They are heavier than I was expecting and the paint job on them is of a very high quality. The scene they depict is both well sculptured, colourful and sweet as Gandalf and Bilbo stand on opposite sides of Bilbo's Bag End front door, oblivious to the trials that lay ahead of themselves and their friends.
Both the book and the bookends are beautiful (even the box they come in is extremely pretty) and at this price they are a steal.
