United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Box Set, Cast/Crew Interview(s), Filmographies, Interactive Menu, Multi-DVD Set, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: This collection includes all five original BBC adaptations of the LORD PETER WIMSEY mystery stories. Based on the popular detective novels of Dorothy L. Sayers, the miniseries feature Ian Carmichael as title character Wimsey, an aristocratic gentleman in 1920s England who solves crimes among Britain's upper crust. Acting as Lord Peter's Watson was his valet Bunter (Glyn Houston), a man whose (apparently) checkered past served him well when analysing the criminal mind. Each of the five series is presented on two discs and include THE UNPLEASANTNESS AT THE BELLONA CLUB (1972), THE NINE TAILORS (1974), MURDER MUST ADVERTISE (1973), FIVE RED HERRINGS (1975), and CLOUDS OF WITNESS (1972). ...The Lord Peter Wimsey Collection - 10-DVD Box Set ( Five Red Herrings / The Nine Tailors / Murder Must Advertise / The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club / Clouds of Witness ) ( Lord Peter Wimsey: 5 Red Herrings / The Lord Peter Wimsey: Nin

This collection of Lord Peter Wimsey stories is superb. The late Ian Carmichael is at his debonair best as Lord Peter, and with solid support from Glyn Houston in particular and various key characters as the stories unfold, ensure that each episode is a complete joy. Both witty and, what is very important, essentially true to the original stories of Dorothy L. Sayers, lovers of the amateur detective genre, set in less sensational and gratuitiously violent times, will find in addition to the acting, the tight directing, excellent scripts and fine attention to period detail, a welcome escape from today's mainstream detective offerings.
Well worth buying.

Having watched some of these Dorothy L Sayers adaptations as a child, it was a nostalgic treat to be re-acquainted with the complete set featuring the much missed and somewhat underrated Ian Carmichael. The elaborately plotted and quite remarkable Nine Tailors is the standout for me but the whole set makes for enjoyable viewing and boasts, alongside two splendid central performances, a host of familiar tv faces from the 1970s such as Paul Darrow, Christopher Timothy, John Junkin, Gwen Taylor et al.

Carmichael's performance is more multi-faceted than some reviews suggest. Yes he does venture into Bertie Wooster mode during `Murder Must Advertise' (and with reason) but also subtly conveys the guilt of a man whose desire to investigate often results in unanticipated and painful moral dilemmas. He is matched every inch of the way by Glyn Houston's knowingly understated Bunter.

Inevitably this won't be for everyone, too considered , too `upper class', too `of its time' (in the moral code that Sayers and Wimsey insist upon)and too gentle for many. However for those who enjoy some finely crafted stories featuring great characters from an age of elegance, this will be a joy. The delightful and unassuming interview snippets with Mr. Carmichael adding a now poignant reminder of what a star we have lost.

Watching Ian Carmichael as Lord Peter back in the early seventies was one of the high points of television in my youth, and it was delightful to be able to watch again as I edge out of middle age into my dotage.

Sayer's detective stories combined excellent writing, clever plots and likeable characters. While purists can object that Carmichael was too old for the role, he plays the part well. The cast, costumes, props and settings all evoke the sprit of the stories and the age. The adaptations clearly needed to cut some of the original material, but remain remarkably faithful to the detail as well as the spirit of the original. They maybe over 25 years old but don't feel dated - and one fears any modern adaptation would suffer from this weird fetish for "improving" the story.

Great writing solidly translated to very entertaining television.
