Murder is hardly the best way for Lord Peter and his bride, the famous mystery writer Harriet Vane, to start their honeymoon. It all begins when the former owner of their newly acquired estate is found quite nastily dead in the cellar. And what Lord Peter had hoped would be a very private and romantic stay in the country soon turns into a most baffling case, what with the misspelled "notise" to the milkman and the intriguing condition of the dead man -- not a spot of blood on his smashed skull and not a pence less than six hundred pounds in his pocket.

I bought this DVD to round off my collection of Dorothy L. Sayers DVDs (produced by the BBC), first starring Ian Carmichael and secondly Edward Petherbridge and Harriet Walters. This film, however, predates them and is presumably why DLS's final play/book was not produced for television.
This is an American production and is 70 years old. It is very much of its era and consequently bears little resemblance to its origins.
Lord Wimsey and his wife Lady Wimsey are set to honeymoon in a house in Devon and agree that no detecting or detective novel writing will mar their new relationship.
They arrive at the house, with their elderly butler Bunter clutching a box of wine bottles, in their open sports car. Tall dark and handsome Peter Wimsey calls in the sweep when smoke fills the house. When the body of the previous owner of the house is discovered an Inspector from Scotland Yard is called in (You remember it is set in Devon). Wimsey solves the murder and all ends happily in 83 minutes.
I was quite amused by this film, more from appreciating the American view of England than anything else and spotting all the differences from the book. However it fades in comparison with a Fred Astaire film or a Raymond Chandler mystery. So, not recommended, unless you want to round off your collection of DLS's DVDs......

busman's nightmare 17 Jun 2011
Well I have loved the book since 1987 and was sorely disapointed by the film. Hard not to believe, since the author dorothy l sayers loathed it also , I think on its opening night she refused to go into the cinema to see it and waited in some nearby building. The film completely loses the passion between the two protagonists lord and lady peter wimsey. He has spent 5 years trying to get her to fall in love with him and when she does so it is passionately and completely. The film is utterly sterile and also does not reflect the age difference between lord peter and his bride he is supposed to be in his mid forties and she 13 years his junior , the actress looks far too old and stayed. But if you are a sayers fan you won't let a bad review stop you. Because I knew how bad this film was before I bought it and my curiosity just was killing me. Oh and bunter was supposed to be lord peter's aage they fought together in the great war and yet in the film he looks about 80. Go on cheer yourself up and watch the BBC edward petherbridge version of sayers 3 previous books x :)
