I bought this DVD to round off my collection of Dorothy L. Sayers DVDs (produced by the BBC), first starring Ian Carmichael and secondly Edward Petherbridge and Harriet Walters. This film, however, predates them and is presumably why DLS's final play/book was not produced for television.
This is an American production and is 70 years old. It is very much of its era and consequently bears little resemblance to its origins.
Lord Wimsey and his wife Lady Wimsey are set to honeymoon in a house in Devon and agree that no detecting or detective novel writing will mar their new relationship.
They arrive at the house, with their elderly butler Bunter clutching a box of wine bottles, in their open sports car. Tall dark and handsome Peter Wimsey calls in the sweep when smoke fills the house. When the body of the previous owner of the house is discovered an Inspector from Scotland Yard is called in (You remember it is set in Devon). Wimsey solves the murder and all ends happily in 83 minutes.
I was quite amused by this film, more from appreciating the American view of England than anything else and spotting all the differences from the book. However it fades in comparison with a Fred Astaire film or a Raymond Chandler mystery. So, not recommended, unless you want to round off your collection of DLS's DVDs......
