The Lord of Death 27 Dec 2010

This is another wonderful atmospheric book in Mr Pattison's 'Shan' series. Somewhat shorter than the earlier books in the series, but it took only a few lines to capture my attention and transport me to the mountains of Tibet. The characters are well drawn and the descriptions of the towns, villages and people are very evocative. But what a vision of Tibet it is. In the Author's Note at the end of the book we are reminded that the author has not exaggerated the oppression of the indigenous Tibetan people. I almost felt like a voyeur, and guilty for deriving so much pleasure from reading the book. Nevertheless I eagerly await the next episode in Shan's life and recommend this good read.

This is the latest in a series of novels about Inspector Shan. Eliot Pattison writes very different books to the norm. Their setting is Tibet at the time just after Chinese Chairman Mao. Life is very difficult for the ordinary Tibetan because the Chinese are destroying all the Monasteries, stealing artifacts that are thousands of years old, and killing or imprisioning Monks. This is where Inspector Shan comes in, he usually has an American expert on his side, and together they overcome the corrupt Chinese Army officials. Along with all this, you get descriptions of Tibetan life and culture.
