Product Description

The year is 1809. Wellington is fighting the French in the Peninsula, but all is not well back in England. While the beaus and belles of the haut ton move among the salons and the great houses of London, Napoleon’s agents stalk the streets.

When Charlotte Hopesay, a young woman with a taste for gothic novels, is caught up in a plot to discredit her fiancé’s family she is brought into the orbit of Lord Alexander Harrow, and the secretive organisation dedicated to countering the Corsican’s ambitions, known only as Wenlock House.

In that unexpected part of the literary landscape where Georgette Heyer meets Jason Bourne, Charlotte and Lord Alexander must struggle to defeat a conspiracy that threatens the very highest in the land. And through it all there marches an infamous elephant, the Bridekirk Behemoth.

If you can imagine George Smiley or Harry Palmer in a crinoline and a bonnet... 27 Jun 2011

This was an enjoyable read. The writing was very good and the characters were vivid and interesting. If I had picked this up as a paperback novel in an airport, I would have been very pleased. I wanted to know what was going to happen to these people. The beautifully crafted historical backdrop was a significant interest in its own right without actually crowding out the story. There was also an undercurrent of dry wit, which I found quite appealing. The plot was entirely credible, but the reason for dropping a star is that I could have coped with a bit more complexity.

Apparently this book was not taken up by a traditional publisher because it didn't fit neatly into any established fiction genre. Well, I think that the time has come for a new genre, although I'm struggling to think of an appropriate tag: perhaps "unisex action novel" or "historical thriller."

So, if you're a woman who likes John Le Carre, Len Deighton and Arthur Conan Doyle or a bloke who has happily read some of the works of Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte, you might well like this book.
