Loose Screw Review,
By Paul Capell (Lancaster, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Loose Screw: The Shocking Truth About Our Prison System (Paperback)
This is an autobiographical book and some of the author's drinking exploits become rather boring but overall I warmed very much to him and his style of writing. Jim Dawkins is very truthful about prison life and his own life, and he gives us a very candid insight in to prison life which through his eyes is very shocking and worrying.I am sure that what he says is true, and depending on one's own view of what our prisons should be doing to its inmate population, the reader will decide what is reasonable treatment or not.To my mind the system is riddled with abuse. The prison service have a duty to the public and to the inmates also, and to my mind wherever possible to rehabilitate and help as many inmates as possible.
The reader should know that a large part of the book concerns Dawkins own life, and it takes a while to actually get in to prison proper. It is at times sad, very funny and very revealing, and always very readable. I can recomend this book to anyone who is interested in our prison service. I shall read this book again in a few months' time.

The Loose Screw,
This review is from: The Loose Screw: The Shocking Truth About Our Prison System (Paperback)
An average book if you are ignorant to the Prison system, however the author appears to relie on anecdotes from other prison staff (as a serving officer with over 20 years service AT Wandsworth and Belmarsh and knowing of Dawkins). I am not denying that corruption and beatings have and do occur but Dawkins seems to have seen it all, perhaps if he had written his own experiences and not drawn on anecdotes of others the book would be a pamphlet. Some of the prisoners he claims to have befriended where at the time of his service loacated in prisons in which the author (Dawkins) would not have been serving in.
