Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
It is unlikely that anybody will press "Play" on Loose Screw anticipating an audacious shift in direction for the Pretenders: Chrissie Hynde hasn't changed so much as her hairstyle since 1977. However, while Loose Screw is dominated, like all other Pretenders recordings, by Hynde's instantly recognisable drawl, it does dare to throw a few new shapes. These are mostly in the form of a dominant but never quite overpowering reggae influence; the result, while never quite as catastrophic as anything perpetrated by UB40, falls some way short of emulating the muscular menace the Clash projected on London Calling.

Possibly by way of reassurance, Loose Screw is topped and tailed by songs whose strength is their familiarity. Opening track "Lie to Me" is rambunctious new wave rock & roll, an older and angrier companion piece to "Back on the Chain Gang" or "Middle of the Road"; the album's finale, "I Wish You Love", is a gorgeous ballad displaying Hynde's under-utilised abilities as a torch singer, much as "2000 Miles" once did. --Andrew Mueller

CD Description
Eighth studio album from the Pretenders and the follow-up to their 1999 release 'Viva El Amor'. Melodic rock songs are mixed with melancholy ballads, reflective reggae and dub inspired tracks. Produced by Kevin Bacon (Finley Quaye/Ziggy Marley), the album features a track co-written by former Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker.

5.0 out of 5 stars They're back., 22 May 2003
I bought this CD yesterday, and I am addicted. It is the best from Chrisie and the boys for years.
It makes you feel as tho you can walk out of the door with serious power in your step. Try Walk lLke a Panther for this effect. And there is real feeling in I Should Of... regret down a mike. Been there?

Don't sit and read this, buy it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretend Pretenders, 1 Jul 2003
I am possibly the biggest fan of Chrissie Hynde, and her recordings have been memorable since The Pretenders started, but I'm afraid Loose Screw is sadly lacking as a Pretenders album. I had to play it several times over before I could even try to get into it.

The Pretenders' graunchy, squealy, pounding and unique trademark guitar riff is a shadow of its former self. Only on Lie To Me, Kinda Nice, I like It and Saving Grace does the guitar sound we all adore feature prominently but it's just too quiet and not in-your-face at all! Yet the bass is too much the other way! It's like the producer brought the bass to the fore at the expense of the real guitar sound, and consequently spoils it and ruins what could have been good songs! I even checked my amp to se if it was playing up because it doesn't normally sound like a Vauxhall Nova full of pseudo gangster rap white boys cruising the neighbourhood with a boot full of bass boom box!

In a couple of songs I recognise UB40 circa 1980 style rhythms, which doesn't do it for me. The Pretenders are raunchy not reggae!

The Saving Grace is that vocally and lyrically Ms Hynde is at her usual brilliance, plenty of emotion and seductive"Woah-woah-woah yeahs!". She's always been a great singer but on this album it does sound like she's fronting a different band!

The Losing is my favourite track, but normally on a Pretenders album I would have about four, five, six or more favourite songs.

If I was in a 'plane plunging down to earth out of control with Ms Hynde, and we only had one parachute between us, I 'd still let her have it (if she'd didn't just take it from me anyway) but I'm sorry Chrissie, no offence, but this album is not going in my favourites CD carry case alongside Last of the Independents, Isle of View and Viva D'Amour, well not yet anyway. I'd be grateful if someone would send me a proper re-mixed version though!

1.0 out of 5 stars An Imminently Forgettable Experiment, 26 Jun 2009
By A. R. Dow "Primrosehillbilly" (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I don't think a CD that I've bought has gone from "eagerly expected" status to "bitterly disappointed" and thence to be recycled at the Music & Video Exchange in Camden, faster.

Chrissie Hynde makes great, brave, ballsy, rock records, that make you feel good about life, feel like you can accept its challenges, and that it's great that there's this tough but tender gal standing tall in a predominatly male world without compromising herself, being judged purely by her lyrics, music and band leadership. At all of which she usually excels.

Guitars......Great Drums.........Tight Guitar Solo's.........Lyrics that probe, stab, put you down in an off hand drawl, make you smile wryly and look forward to the next track. That's a Pretenders Album, isn't it?

Sorry, none or very little at all of that's here. Ok, I can see why you don't want to get too stereotyped after such a great rock'n'roll recording career, but why release this mainly light, insipid, lovers rock pastiche?

I still believe in Chrissie. I'll still buy her records, but I'll take "Break Up The Concrete" as an attempted return to form, await the return of a line up with Martin Chambers and Co. and hope for the subsequent release of another truly great Pretenders album soon, so I can carry on forgetting about this blemish.
