For those new to Black Flag, you'll probably have combed through reviews of 'Damaged' and some of the earlier EP's. And rightly so, the 'Damaged' album is a classic, straight forward, brutal songwriting, yet in many ways it lacked the depth that Black Flag showed on latter works.
Loose Nut is the second last Flag album and shows a band in their absolute prime. Greg Ginn's guitar is like a jazz chainsaw, careering all over these tracks, Henry delivers in brutal style as ever on each track and it's held together by arguably the Flag's best ever rhythm section.
Post 'Damaged' Black Flag really started to diving into some incredible lyrical territory and listening back to this it made me realise how personal all these songs are to me. It's absolutely on the button for those late teenage / early 20's years of testosterone and utter confusion. It makes sense of so much and in that respect, like most other Flag albums is a key part of my musical existence.
Would it work for you? Well, that remains for you to see. This demands attention, dedication and persistence, but once you're there.... you'll be hooked for sure.
