The buzz for Nelly Furtado's Loose began before the music was even recorded, with the announcement that legendary hip-hop knob-twirler Timbaland (Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake) would act as co-producer. The question on fans' minds: what would it sound like when a hip-hop kingpin collaborated with an artist who culls inspiration not just from pop music, but also her own Portuguese roots?
As it turns out, Loose incorporates a number of different styles along its journey, but is--surprisingly--primarily divided between '80s-influenced electronica and latin-infused pop. This disc is very different from Furtado's previous CDs, a fact immediately evident from track one, the new wave-affected "Afraid." A strong opener, the song is the beginning of a 1-2-3 punch of uptempo, infectious dance floor beats. The second cut, "Maneater," also proves to be incredibly catchy, but the verses and keyboard sound too much like they were plucked from electroclash artist Peaches' tree, and originality is lost. The perfect summer pop song follows, the massive hit "Promiscuous," which features clever interplay between Furtado and Timbaland on their sassy duet. From that point, Loose oscillates between the Miami-affected sounds of R&B, Latino pop, and reggaeton ("Showtime," "Te Busque," and "No Hay Igual" respectively) and the aforementioned '80s vibe ("Glow," "Do It"). Fans will hear Furtado at her vocal best on "Say It Right" and "In God’s Hands"--two of the most lyrically compelling tracks on the disc. --Denise Sheppard

Review
Making a spectacular comeback with the grinding bassline of "Maneater", Nelly Furtado has ditched the dreary folk pop she's most famous for. Instead Loose takes lessons from the Stefani school of hip-pop, adding more class and sparkle from the infallible Timberland. The producer even takes a turn on the tracks himself, rapping on sleazy ass-shaker "Promiscuous Girl" and drumming on Spanish reggaeton "No Hay Igual".
The girl-next-door still resonates though with the Spanish guitar of mixed language "Te Busqué", featuring Colombian superstar Juanes, which conjures up imaginations of romantic sunsets. "All Good Things" sees the Portuguese Chanteuse in a Madge-like brooding campfire sing-along.
With equal measures of nice and nasty girl Nel, haters of "I'm Like A Bird" should perhaps give her another chance. With Loose, she's certainly earned it. --Talia Kraines

What an absolute stonker of an album. Never previously owned a Nelly album but was more than impressed by the UK single releases Maneater and Promiscuous. The album is jam-packed with cracking tunes - standouts for me are the aforementioned hits as well as Say it Right (fantastic) All good things (the latest UK single) and Wait for You.
I've been kicking myself for taking so long to buy it - highly recommended.

I liked Maneater but on first listen i was a bit let down with the rest of the album. However i listened to it a second time and began to see the tracks individually and i have to say i really really like it now. My favourite song on the whole album is Te Busque. The lyrics are beautiful and Nelly obviously works well with Juanes. All round a very varied and fun album with a serious and romantic side. I approve!

I loved the first two singles from this album and really wanted to get the album. I did think the album might just have a couple of good tracks and the rest be album fillers but I was so wrong.
Maneater is a great indicator of what is on this album, it is filled with tracks as catchy as that song and it will not leave you disappointed. It is a great funky/poppy album that will have you singing and dancing along. It is amazing and hasn't been off my stereo since I got it, I want to give it 10/10 as it totally amazed me and is great. One of the best albums of 2006!!
