Product Description

Product Description

"Loops" will offer a landscape, both in print form and online, for today's exceptional writers to engage with subjects, individuals and issues that color all corners of the pop music world. Free from the shackles of release schedules, "Loops" will provide a space for artists to publish tour diaries, non-sequiturs and think-pieces and an opportunity for writers to stretch out and go off-map to share their thoughts and ideas. Our first issue will include contributions from Nick Cave, Hari Kunzru, Nick Kent, Jon Savage, Amanda Petrusich, Kevin Cummins, James Yorkston and more. 'Here at last is a haven for adventurous long-form music writing of every sort: ruminations and rhapsodies, reported investigations and critical essays, pieces that range widely across time and genre scape, and others that focus intently on individual artists, songs, tiny moments of epiphany. As a writer and as a reader, I look forward to Loops with immense excitement' - Simon Reynolds, author of "Rip It Up and Start Again".

5.0 out of 5 stars real music reading, 5 Jul 2009
I'd been looking forward to this having heard about it online, and I'm really impressed with it. It's great to read something that isn't just trying to hype up whatever's come out that week. The articles are both log and short and play with the format, but not self-consciously so. David Shrigley provides 6 fantastic drawings, his wonderful deadpan humour shining through.

There is a piece by Nick Kent, previuolsy long-lost in the 1970s, on Nick
Drake. This speaks volumes about both the music and writing on music. In the present there's an entertaining interview with Glasgow's Optimo and a wry wander through New York by Hari Kunzru. Lastly it looks and feels fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant stuff, 2 Jul 2009
Just got hold of this. Its very high end design, feels and looks like a real event.
Even better the writing is a wildly mixed selection of essays, poems, and articles on er, music. if that sounds a bit high-brow - it isn't. Richard Milward really goes to town on Spacemen 3 and how wired and messed up they were. James Yorkston writes funnily, poignantly and not a little self-deprecatingly around a tour he did of Ireland. there are some familiar heavy hitters: Nick Kent on Nick Drake, Jon Savage, Simon Reynolds. And some excellent pieces by Geeta Dayal and Anwyn Crawford. And Matt Ingram.

The whole thing feels sharp, confident and out on its own and, if its never heard of cross-platform digital twitter whatever, its not making a point of it either.

Perfect summer reading

5.0 out of 5 stars at last, 16 Jul 2009
By Hedwig (London, UK) - See all my reviews
i've been waiting for this publication for about six months and i have to say it is well worth the wait. i guess the thinking is to create a magazine (the size of a book!), something like granta or the believer but make it all have some relationship to music. the former lost it's way about ten years ago and the believer is inconsistent so loops fills a vacuum. the editors resisted the temptation to use zappa's quote "writing about music is like dancing about architecture" and instead have managed to pull together some of the best writers in the business - jon savage's lost punk writings are terrific, richard milward's drugby union rant about spacemen 3 and spiritualized is honest and funny and maggoty lamb's take on the music press is something that should have been said by someone else a long long time ago - although it probably wouldn't have been put quite so well. add to that simon reynolds, nick kent and nick cave and you have an exceptional read.
