Having got into the Kompakt label through their
Pop Ambient 2012 compilations - many of which feature tracks by The Field aka Axel Willner (he features on
Pop Ambient 2012 under his alter ego Loops Of Your Heart) - I've scooped up a lot of records by artists featuring on these fantastic records, including
Hundred Million Love Years and
Movies Is Magic. But despite hearing all the hype about The Field, I'd not got round to pocketing either of his first two albums,
Yesterday And Today and
From Here We Go Sublime. But I was determined not to miss out when I heard he was releasing a new record, and I'm glad I haven't let Looping State of Mind pass me by.
As the title implies, loops are the order of the day here, but the thing that stands out the most and propels the album above other techno records is the driving bass. The first two tracks don't do a great deal for me, but the third track, Burned Out, which drops a slice of vocals into the mix, kicks off five flawless tracks. Burned Out has a more than a sniff of Orbital about it, but pushed by a slightly funkier - but not too funky - bass line.
It's hard to pick a highlight from the other four tracks, all of which are equally brilliant and equally hypnotic. The Field knows how to build up a tower of rhythm in which each part throbs as much as the others and is as crucial to the overall structure.
This might all sound a bit vague, but it's hard to translate the effect of this record into words.
But the key words to describe it are: hypnotic; loops; techno; bass. If you like any of those, then this album will reward you if you give it an hour of your time.
