This is one of those games which, when a new player asks "How do I win?" you can honestly say "I don't know", but (hopefully) with a smile on your face!
There are five types of cards. These enable players to set the winning condition, change the rules and affect both their and other players' hands. In the turn of a single player it is possible for the rules to change several times, and the same can happen during the next players' turn. The rules are, potentially, in a constant state of flux, hence the name of the game. That said, the rule changes are generally simple, easily followed, and introduced one at a time.
In Martian Fluxx the players play the Martians invading Earth, with humans constantly trying to thwart them, perhaps with The Army or Germs. At the same time, your fellow Martians are also trying to successfully invade, and also thwart you; it's a game of player verses player versus game, yes, the players can all loose!
No players are knocked out during play and other players may join in at any time.
Games may last from a few minutes to many minutes, anything from 5 minutes to 30 minutes would not be unreasonable, with shorter games being more likely.
Martian Fluxx may be played by 2 or more players, but can start to drag with six or more players. The most enjoyment would probably be with three to five players.
The educational value of this toy is limited to being able to read and understand the rules and simple counting, although there is also limited opportunity for learning some strategy/tactics. The cards are of reasonable quality but being a card game the durability will depend on how violently the cards are handled during play.
For up to four players a typical kitchen, dining or patio table will probably suffice; if you have room to play Monopoly, Risk or another similar board game then you've got enough table space. Playing Fluxx in the back of a moving car would not be practical but it would be suitable for taking up the time whilst on a train or ferry (provided there is a table handy).
This game went down so well with my regular gaming group that one of the other players promptly went out and purchased Zombie Fluxx (ASIN: 1929780664, at the time of writing). The next gaming night we alternated between the Martian and Zombie variants, to much hilarity and enjoyment. Having been able to compare the two games I can say that both are enjoyable, but that Zombie Fluxx may just tip the scales in its favour over Martian Fluxx, but don't let that put you off Martian Fluxx; get both!
