Product Description

CD Description

British indie label Ember released a number of rock albums and singles between 1969 and 1972, which today are much sought after by collectors of psychedelic, progressive and folk rock sounds. Many of the best of these recordings are gathered on Looking Towards The Sky. Foremost among the artists compiled here is progressive rock band Blonde On Blonde, represented by tracks from both of their Ember albums. Tyrannosaurus Rex-style acoustic hippy duo Knocker Jungle and progressive folk group 9.30 Fly each managed one now highly collectable long player for the label. Fsticanta Voyage has salvaged an exceptional track from Blue Beard s album, which never got beyond test pressings. The remainder of the material is taken from singles, ranging from the fuzzy psychedelic rock of Canadians The Dorians and the melodic folk rock of Paddy Maguire (backed by heavy friends Steve Winwood and Fotheringay), to the soul-rock fusion of Milt Matthews Inc, and from the psych-pop of our title track by Davey Payne & The Medium Wave and a collectable garage B-side by the otherwise pop-orientated Rusty Harness, to the rousing finale from Back Street Band. Looking Towards The Sky and its sequel (planned for later in 2010) complement Fantastic Voyage s existing, highly popular compilations of Ember Beat and Ember Pop, with no duplication of tracks.

If you`re looking for new paths in the progressive way all along the late sixties and early 70s, this is the way. Ember records started in 1960 by a jazz aficionado and owner of the Flamingo jazz venue. Almost unknown artists and obscure gems you sure will taste in a mix of psycodelia, folk-arty-rock and true progressive. There`s life apart from Crimson, Genesis, Yes et all. Don`t go wrong and take this from the period 1969-72. Many of the best songs of the Ember catalog in this kind of music are here and you will like them.

Brilliant! 29 Oct 2010

This is a fantastic album every track is really good, i will be looking for more from all these different artists, some of the tracks have undertones of the 1960's sound and it's so varied. Well worth listening to and at last i've found something to listen to that is different.

excellent 19 May 2010

For progressive rock, this is pretty song oriented. Looking Towards The Sky covers the more folk and folk rock influences end of the underground.

But with excellent bands like Blond on Blond, this music does have a lot of amazing flourishes and is highly enjoyable.

Despite the short length, one hour long CD, this is worth picking up.
