Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

Gene Pitney was never, technically, a great singer. But as Looking Through--The Ultimate Collection shows, what he had was charisma. His voice was irresistibly alive, thin and piercing, collapsing into choked histrionics at the climax of each miniature melodrama, then recovering to hit one last high note, iridescent with vibrato. Given the right material, his delivery is unique and truly affecting. No-one else could do what Pitney does with "Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart", or "Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa", investing them with precisely the right balance of menace and vulnerability, elevating their anguish to operatic heights and bringing out the dark, selfish heart of both songs. Best of all are the martyr's hymn "I'm Gonna Be Strong", and "Backstage (I'm Lonely)", a frenzy of self-pity amid hysterical orchestration. --Taylor Parkes

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly the ultimate Gene Pitney collection 31 Mar 2003
By Peter Durward Harris #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This is a very comprehensive collection of Gene's finest music. All his British and American hits are here, including his American country hits with George Jones and his late eighties duet with Marc Almond.

In the sixties, Gene had many high-charting pop hits in Britain and America. Curiously, none of them reached number one, although he reached number two in both countries with different songs. He finally got to number one in Britain when Marc Almond and Gene recorded Something's gotten hold of my heart as a duet.

I'm gonna be strong was Gene's only hit to reach the top ten in both Britain and America. Gene's other top ten American hits to be found here are The man who shot Liberty Valance, Only love can beak a heart and It hurts to be in love. Gene's other top ten British hits to be found here are Twenty four hours from Tulsa, That girl belongs to yesterday, I must be seeing things, Looking through the eyes of love, Princess in rags, Backstage, Nobody needs your love, Just one smile and the original solo version of Something's gotten hold of my heart.

With a total of fifty tracks this collection includes not just the essentials, but all the minor hits and even a couple of songs recorded in Italian. It also includes his original version of Hello Mary Lou, a song he wrote before he had a recording contract and which was a huge hit for Ricky Nelson.

You won't find a better compilation of Gene's music anywhere, although if you just want a basic sixties hits collection there are plenty of single CD's to choose from.

Ah, Gene Pitney. Much derided for his cheesy `60's ballad pop style, but secretly much admired by the sneering critics. Immensely popular right up to his recent passing, this excellent 2 disc set collects together all his best recordings and shows why he was so popular.

This is essentially a collection of great catchy tunes, with great catchy lyrics (Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart' for example), sung with Pitney's instantly recognisable light, poppy voice with characteristic drawl.

There is a whole host of great tracks here - `24 Hours From Tulsa', `Town Without Pity', `The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance' and `Looking Through the Eyes Of Love' to name a few. All the big hits, and several lesser known gems.

And album that no-one with taste will admit to owning, but one that will have you tapping your foot and singing along for hours...
