Synopsis

This new HBO® comedy series revolves around three thirty-something friends living in San Francisco, who explore the exciting, sometimes overwhelming, options available to a new generation of gay men. Friendship may bind them, but each is at a markedly different point in his journey: Patrick (Jonathan Groff – "Spring Awakening") is a 29-year-old video game designer returning to the dating world in the wake of his ex's engagement; aspiring artist Agustín (Frankie J. Alvarez – "Smash"), 31, questions the idea of monogamy amid a move to domesticate with his boyfriend; and the group's oldest member, longtime waiter Dom (Murray Bartlett), 39, is facing middle age with dreams still unfulfilled. The trio's stories intertwine dramatically as they search for happiness and intimacy in an unparalleled era for gay men. A key aspect of the Looking mix is the progressive, unpredictable, sexually open culture of the Bay Area, with San Francisco serving as a backdrop for the group's lives.

I really looked forward to this series, hoping it would be as enjoyable as the US version of Queer as Folk which I thought was a fantastic gay-themed series which actually improved on the UK original. I'm pleased to report I was not disappointed - some good characters and storylines and good to see our very own Russell Tovey laying the groundwork for his character who becomes a regular in Season 2. The only drawback I think is that the series is rather short - not only due it's mere 8 episodes but also the fact that each episode is just under 30 minutes so you're not able to get quite the same depth as the more traditional 40-45 minutes that you usually find with this sort of series. There is some good humour on offer here too and I for one can't wait for season 2.

(FYI - I am a straight man) Looking was completely overshadowed by True Detective earlier this year with both of them being released around the same time, and I hope that it gains more popularity as the seasons go on. I fell in love with the characters and couldn't wait to see episode after episode. It is sweet, funny, and a really satisfying watch! Totally recommend it.

(FYI - I am a gay man) I I totally loved the HBO series 'Looking' when it premiered on Sky Atlantic in the UK. It was so refreshing to watch a series based on a group of gay men living in San Francisco circa 2014. The leading characters are beautifully drawn and written with such up front and in-your-face honesty. Well done HBO! I look forward to buying the DVD when released and to the next season when it airs.

'Looking' is a refreshing look at gay relationships which are not just about sex. The characters are believable, the acting is natural and makes you feel you know these people intimately. It is really refreshing to find a series like this which takes ordinary daily life situations and develops them slowly and realistically. It also features our UK own Russell Tovey, a real bonus. He adds the UK dimension to life amongst US gay men.

I just loved this first series and hope there will be many more to come. If you are looking for an engaging story with a great cast then look no further .... 'Looking' is it! Definitely five stars from me!

Made by HBO this has quality written all over it. Based in San Francisco we meet three gay friends Patrick, Augustin and Dom. They are all at the ages when life becomes more serious which normally coincides with your options getting ever limited. Dom is a waiter about to turn forty and he really wants to be his own boss and meet that certain someone. Patrick makes video games and is single but sometimes lacking belief in his own talent. He also has a new boss and he is not only young, good looking but English.

Then Augustin has met that special someone and set up home but seems to be pressing the self destruct button in everything he does almost as if he can't bear the thought of having it all. The three of them have their separate hills to climb and each other for support. This is the beginning of their stories.

This is just brilliant a rival to the original `Queer as folk' and it does have some sex based scenes but this is not a porn fest at all. It is all about relationships, life, dreams and the harsh realities of life. There are some great performances here - actually there is not one bad one. I loved seeing Scott Bakula as a special guest and also Russell Tovy keeping the Brit end up - if you will forgive the pun. They have made a second series too so hopefully this is one that is here to stay - at least for a while.

This show is awesome!! Interesting characters..brilliant writing/directing & a very natural feel to it!
It follows the lives of a group gay friends living/loving/working in San Francisco & the ups & downs of relationships & friendship.
I won't spoil it for you but I was hooked from ep1!! I just wish they had a longer running time (around 30mins)
Go ahead..you'll love it!!

This is such a powerful and nuanced show. It felt incredibly intimate, honest and real. The characters are 3 dimensional characters and human with flaws- there is no coming out stories which is so refreshing, their sexualities are part of them but not the main focus. They are all looking for happiness in life and truth and it feels so amazing to go on this journey with them. Love love love this show and I wish there could be a season 3.

Looking was not what I expected. Eight half hour episodes. I could happily have sat through eight feature length episodes. Wonderful acting, good story lines and a sense of reality, apart form the fact that everyone is buffed and fit. [Although this is in America so maybe it is reality, although how they fit in jobs, that amount of time in the gym and a social life is beyond me] Nice to see our own Russell Tovey playing gay for a change. I have only two quibbles: the first is the diction, I understood about 50% of the speech because it was so badly mumbled, but managed to get what was going on anyway, and secondly why did Russell keep slipping into a Ricky Gervaise impersonation?

I cannot wait for series two and have to wholeheartedly recommend this series.
