Product Description

In a literary tour-de-force, Colin Bennett advances the daring thesis that the defining moment of the twentieth century will prove to be 12.30 pm on Thursday, November 26, 1952, when George Adamski claims to have met Orthon, a long-haired youth from Venus.

About the Author

COLIN BENNETT was born in Robin Hood’s Sherwood Forest, within arrow-shot of the Sheriff of Nottingham’s castle. He left school after studying mathematics and science, became a professional musician, then a mercenary soldier for a time, before reading English at Balliol College, University of Oxford. He had several plays performed on the professional stage in London, including the Royal Court Theatre, before retraining as an electronics engineer to cure what he calls a bad dose of left-liberal decadence. He then ran his own electronics consultancy and printing firm. He has had two novels published, The Infantryman’s Fear of Open Country, and The Entertainment Bomb, and he lives within spear-throwing distance of Portobello Road

Hooked on Orthon 6 Dec 2002
Format:Paperback
Colin Bennett's approach to the life of Adamski compares with his attitudes to Ufology as a whole - pretty unique. The life of Adamski, who is regarded by many to have been a complete fraudster, is examined not in the traditional true/false - fact/fiction manner but relates to the political and culturally metamorphising world that he lived in - and that he helped to forever change.
Perhaps Adamski's faults and failings are, in fact, common to all "prophets" - Adamski was, maybe, as honest any human being could hope to be. Possibly all prophets are victims of contrived and false messages from the "Gods".
"Looking for Orthon" is probably unique in UFO literature - does it herald a wind of change in the way we view Ufology?
Quite possibly - it certainly presents a point of view that is an alternative to "filing system " research.
Superb.

Adamski's stange life should make a fascinating biography, but this unfortunately is not the one. Most of his early years appear to have been ignored or just glossed over in a few pages before Adamski's encounter with aliens in 1952. Surely there was more to his past than this? How did he get to where he did? Sadly, we are none the wiser after reading this book. There is also little mention of the pecular, neurotic, insecure atmosphere which percolated 1950's America and which influenced so many people. This would have been fascinating to have analysed as it is not possible to separate the lives of people such as Adamski from this emotional context. Instead, the story of the man is submerged under endless speculation and opinion of the author and he fails to come alive. Also, the book could have done with some good proof-reading and rigorous editing; the quality of both of these is appalling. Looking for Orthon? No. Looking for a biography, and one which has not been so sloppily or lazily made. Sorry, I really wanted to like this book.

"LOOKING FOR ORTHON" should be on every UFOlogists bookshelves! Author Colin Bennett swoops back in time and uncovers and strips bare the truth about George Adamski whose subsequent reputation following his death some years after the bestselling "Flying Saucers Have Landed" was tarnished by the apparent lies and figements of his imagination. Colin shows how certain people were involved in cover-ups... a not strictly modern invention ! The book restores belief in man himself. It reinforces the complex, mystifying, tantalising world of the paranormal which stretches far wider than in Adamski's time in the fifties. An author with a perceptive and analytical mind, Colin Bennett displays such far beyond the sheer bravery of re-investigating a fifty year old "classic" incident (Adamski alleged meeting with a 'Man From Venus') which he boldly claims 'the defining moment of the 21st century will prove to be 12.30 p.m. on Thursday November 26th, 1952'. Many of us will agree. Contemporary UFO incidents serve to back up THE TRUTH that Colin Bennett offers us.
