I read "The Long Walk" fifty years ago and even then I felt a sense of disappointment as there were so many unanswered questions. I have re-read the book every five years or so, and since the internet appeared I have made regular searches to obtain any updates, or absolutely any further news at all.

.Linda Willis has carried out a real labour of love researching the truth behind this story. The book is just so well written that the reader feels a sense of excitement whenever a new fact or contact is made by Linda Willis. I have enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed "The Long Walk".

Well recommended. Thank you Ms Willis for devoting your time and energy into updating and researching.

Its good to be able to have a clearer picture of who did what, and this is an interesting addition to the enigma.

Looking for Mr. Smith 17 Jan 2011
By E. White - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I love travel adventure stories. Having read The Long Walk a couple of times over the years, I was disappointed that the author really hasn't provided a definitive answer to the fundamental question: Did this escape actually occur? And who, if anybody, completed the trek from Siberia to India?
For me, publication of this book implied that the controversy and mystery surrounding the escapees had finally been solved when, in fact it really hasn't. Each chapter read too much like "What I did on my summer vacation." As I progressed toward the final pages it became increasing clear that there wasn't going to be a 'Eureka' moment.
I admire the author for all her painstaking work she did over the past decade, but I don't think she should have presented her work to the public in a written form until her research was more complete. I would recommend reading The Long Walk rather than this extensive genealogical search about the escapees.

Interesting! 16 Feb 2011

I had just finished reading "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand when someone told me about The Long Walk. Being a bit of a survival-story junkie I was excited to read It, thinking it was going to be a currently written novel and every bit as good as "Unbroken." I have to say, I was terribly disappointed. Although the story was intriguing and I read it quite quickly, I began questioning it's validity with the gobi desert water issue, and then then when I got to the words 'abominable snowmen' I about slammed it shut. The style of the writing was so simplistic and the lack of details all deterred from the experience. I happened upon Ms Willis's book when doing some searches on the Internet about Long Walk. I really liked this book, and although there is no real definitive answer as to what really took place, it makes for an interesting journey in and of itself. I couldn't put it down. Like another reviewer said, why wasn't Glinski shown the picture? I am also curious why there wasn't more effort put into finding Zaro. Seemed like there were some good leads there and wasn't that one of the goals in the first place - to discover what happened to the other members of the walk? I also was left wondering if Rawicz had possible heard the story from Batko? Could their paths have crossed? I commend Willis for her exhaustive research and a finely written book!

Still looking for Mr. Smith 14 Jan 2011
By SCOTT CAMPBELL - Published on Amazon.com

Book was ok. But I got tired of the repetitive "I then searched on the web for" or "I then received a letter from" or "I then sent a letter to". The last chapter Linda prides herself on what a great investigator she was but yet she leaves out, intentionally I believe, the most obvious investigative question ever. To ask Glinksi if he recognized the photo of Mr. Smith, which she finally obtained from the US state department. If anyone knows the answer to this question please tell me. This book proves that Slavomir stole The Long Walk story while also showing that it really did occur via Witold Glinksi. Although the Glinksi version of the story is being called into question as I write this. Linda has done a lot of work and deserves kudos for that but there are a lot of unanswered questions that remain. She did determine that a British officer in India, Rupert Mayne, remembered questioning 3 emaciated men who stated they walked out of Siberia.
