Product Description

Synopsis

For most people, the words 'Lockerbie, Scotland' evoke one image: the iconic photograph of a battered nose cone of the Pam Am Flight103 jumbo jet surrounded by bodies, investigators, and debris on a lonely hillside. For the members of the Syracuse University community, that photography also represents the loss of 35 students, who were returning home from a semester spent studying abroad. Those students became part of the 270 lives lost in the Pan Am 103 Air Disaster on December 21, 1988, a tragedy that remained the deadliest terror attack on U.S. citizens until 9/11. Two Syracuse University professors and a group of student writers and photographers set out to expand the world's understanding of that town. Lockerbie and its residents charmed them with their generosity, their history, and their lives. So much so, they wanted to tell the world about this place and redefine it beyond the events of one fateful day.Over the course of 12 years and multiple trips, photography professor Larry Mason Jr. and magazine professor Melissa Chessher brought more than 50 students to capture this town in images and words.

Through stunning photography and personal vignettes, "Looking for Lockerbie" introduces the world to some of Lockerbie's most engaging personalities and places: the last milk delivery man; its boy racers; the cheese factory; a local model; the high school and one of the area's few remaining rural schools; a Tibetan Buddhist monastery; a Burns supper; the town's annual gala; and many of the castles, ancient-stone sites, and Roman landmarks that make this borderland historically significant. The book celebrates the connection between a 'wee' town and an American university forged from the grief and sorrow of one horrific air disaster.

Great book!!!! 14 Aug 2009
By Sandra J. Bell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I am from Lockerbie, but now live in America, so I am really enjoying hearing someone else's perspective of the town and surrounding area. It is also great to read about people I know. Love it, even though it is making me a wee but homesick. If you are interested in finding out that there is more to Lockerbie than the plane crash, I would definately recommend it.
Fabulous book; pathetic promotion 18 Nov 2009
By Samuel J. Mcnaughton - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is a wonderful book at so many levels that it is like unraveling a huge string ball, of the types that appear in off-beat pics, to try to convey its significance. The terrorist bombing of PanAm 103 was the opening wedge of, now international, diabolical attacks on innocents. The book shows us, through beautiful photography, how Lockerbie is now, with hints of then. The book is breath-taking, from student photos to text, but, let's face it. Syracuse University Press completely failed promotion. I wouldn't even know about this beautiful, both visually and textually, book if I hadn't stumbled upon it. SU Press, shame on you!!
Great story; great pictures 17 Nov 2009
By LeB - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book has the best of both worlds -- great photographs and inspiring, informative text to accompany them. As an alum of Syracuse and someone who has gone through Remembrance Week in honor of those on the Pan Am 103 flight, I can say that this book provided me with a salient look at the "other side." Though we spend a good deal of time (as we should) remembering our fallen, I had never stopped to think about how the same crash affected those in the town in which the plane landed. If you love beautiful landscapes, touching portraits, and a surprisingly uplifting story, you'll like Looking for Lockerbie.

As the terrorist responsible for the plane crash was recently released (under some shady circumstances) this book is timely as well.
