Product Description

Review

An endearing book (Chris Moss WANDERLUST )

LOOKING FOR ADVENTURE describes the places (Backshall) visits with such infectious enthusiam and colour it's like being there yourself **** (James Delingpole MAIL ON SUNDAY )

Steve Backshall recounts his transformation from suburban boy to a modern-day explorer in this real life tale featuring plenty of danger and excitement. (ABTA Magazine )

His passion for finding the final frontiers makes this a great modern-man-on-a-quest-through-jungles-and-lost-volcanoes read. (Healthy for Men )

His account of life within the heaving Mount Bosavi crater in Papua New Guinea filming Lost Land of the Volcano, and the pressure-cooker atmosphere behind the scenes, brings the text to a thrilling climax. (Jules Howard BBC WILDLIFE )

This is definately worth a read. Whilst it has not changed my own self perception about
why I do some slight crazy activities (needless to say not in the same league of course)there is a
certain comfort in Steve's own rather brutal self assessment about why he has chosen
the path he has. Be warned there are some slightly drier scientific parts towards the
end but for those of us who watched the Land of the Lost series then you will no doubt be
happy that there is a more detailed insight into what went on behind the scenes. I was truly
disturbed to find out that the giant woolly rat discovered met a sticky end at the hands
of science! What struck me is how harshly Steve assesses his early foray into Irian Jaya (as
was), classing it as a total failure when in reality, when put to paper it
reads as a fantastically terrifying learning experience for any young guy - would be explorer
or not. The end is rather abrupt and I was left with the feeling that there should have been more.
This book will be enjoyed by anyone who particpates in any slightly dangerous sport
or travel and questions their own santity in doing so and why they constantly go back for more of the
same pain and torture even when things go wrong. It does not provide all the answers and certainly some of Steve's
personal reflections and self analysis are what I expected but what is apparent is that the
man behind the cheesy grin is actually a rather serious and critical person

Tough to put down! 26 Aug 2011

Format:Hardcover
As I loved the "Lost Land" series, I really looked forward to reading about Steve's experiences and I wasn't disappointed. This was a very entertaining read, with a good balance of scientific info, personal reflections and a lot more laughs than I expected. His writing style is engaging and punchy and I found myself a little disappointed when I finished it!

I decided to cancel my Kindle order in favour of a good old fashioned paper copy as I thought I was missing out on seeing the pics.

This is Steve's first attempt at a book for adult readers, and what a stunning job he has made of it.
If you have seen The Lost Land Programmes,Steve's book will give you a deeper delve into one of their expeditions. Telling it from his perspective it is a fascinating funny and magical journey.
Some of his stories made me smile and laugh out loud others were quite sad.
It is beautifully written transporting the reader to some of the most spectacular areas on our planet.
A must for any Steve Backshall fan !!
