‘A boy haunts his killer before reincarnating as his son’
As TV cameras roll, a Tibetan boy lama is assassinated in Santa Fe,
New Mexico. The event is a coup for media mogul Mark Rider,
a triumph for Chinese General Xi, and a tragedy for top Hollywood
actress Susan Groves. As Susan chases the truth, she is chased in
turn, the media tracking her down to a love tryst on the English
coastline. Death happens, but it is not the end. The boy lama peers
out at media mogul Rider from the afterlife, and is born again as one
of Rider’s twins. Sixteen years pass, and retribution comes.

“Goodman writes with flare and panache, and the narrative fizzes
along. Goodman’s novel soars”. The Times
“Such narrow, narrow confines we live in. Every so often, one of
us primates escapes these dimensions, as Martin Goodman did.
All we can do is rattle the bars and look after him as he runs into the
hills. We wait for his letters home”. The Los Angeles Times

I would urge everyone to read this novel! It has a zany, but totally grounded premise, larger than life, yet rooted in truth. It crosses genres and defies expectations. It's Karma with a capital 'K'. The nail-biting tension of a thriller, mixed in with beautifully evocative locations, underpinned with words of wisdom, which seep into your pores without preaching. It's life-affirming and joyous!

I have just finished reading this book (on my Kindle which I love!)
Every book Martin writes seems to take on a new genre - his last was
well received and won awards and was a biography of the scientist,
J S Haldane - but I feel Martin has really found his voice in this book.
I don't normally read "Thrillers" but once started I couldn't put it down.
Martin is writing about places that are fascinating to those of us who haven't
been there (eg Santa Fe, New Mexico) and taking us into a world that is far
away from our everyday experience (London/politics, power of media, challenges
of reincarnation)but absorbing us into the lives of the characters in a very
real and human way.

This is a terriffic book. I doubt it will surrender its spot at the top of my list of favourite books this year. Start with the fact that it's a compulsive page turning thriller about the triangular relationship among Rupert Murdoch, the Chinese and the Dalai Lama. Add a powerful romance between a top actress and the Chancellor of the Exchequer in which the actress suffers a Diana like death, hounded by paparazzi. If that's not enough for you, try the tag line for the book-"a boy haunts his killer before reincarnating as his son." The boy who's killed is a young Tibetan Lama. He chooses to be reborn into the home of the Rupert Murdoch character. The scene in which the dead boy is watching a couple making love, when he's looking to be reborn, is unforgettable. It's sexy, it's weird, it's funny and it's amazing. The way Goodman plays with genres throughout the book shows that he a writer of the highest achevement and literary virtuosity. All Goodman's books are weird and brilliant. I love them all. Try "I was Carlos Castenada," "On Bended Knees," and "Suffer and Survive." Goodman deserves to be known as one of our most original writing talents. I'm already waiting for whatever comes next.
