Well they say some good must come from everything. Sitting at home with no work due to the credit crunch, I came across a great review of another Joe Jackson Album "Body and Soul" and thought "don't I have something by him".
Looked through the CD collection: Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, Joss Stone, Oops she should be down with the Style Council, but no Joe Jackson. Better try the vinyl... ahh there he is.
I think I must have bought this in a period when I had little time but plenty of money and bought several albums at once which I didn't listen to properly, can't see why else this hasn't been a long time favourite.
Only two tracks are less than excellent, Track 2 "Sunday Papers" struck me as a little monotonous, and the more distinctly New Wave "Got the Time" didn't quite seem to reach the standard of the rest of the album, but then I was never a fan of the Punk/New Wave thing.
On the whole it would be deceptive to describe this album as `Punk' as it is full of delightful melody and has many shades of pace. You are most likely to remember the excellent "Is She Really Going Out With Him" which I recall being a successful single. This is followed by "Happy Loving Couples" which is reminiscent of the Sixties and has a great bass line and percussion.
My Favourite tracks are "Look Sharp" the title track, which has a surprise around every corner and "Fools in Love" a ballad with a distinctly reggae feel yet containing a beautiful piano solo. However, great as these tracks are they struggle to stand out on a second side (vinyl remember) which manages five top tracks on the trot.
I can't comment on the audio quality of the CD version of this album but the performance is outstanding and my vinyl copy sounds fantastic.
