Biography

Some music is intended to paint a romantic scene – a candlelit dinner, a walk along a moonlit beach. Quiet Nights – Diana Krall’s twelfth album – ain’t about that. Using Brazil as a musical point of reference, the award-winning pianist and singer is not suggesting a night out; she means to stay in.

“It's not coy. It's not ‘peel me a grape,’ little girl stuff. I feel this album’s very womanly – like… Read more in Amazon's Diana Krall Store

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

More polished than ever before, Diana Krall strolls with languorous ease through The Look of Love, effortlessly charting her continuing growth as a sophisticated singer of the popular songbook. She brings to a delightful selection of Latin flavoured standards all of the charm that has so captivated her huge following during the past few years. That audience, especially those who enjoyed her last outing, When I Look In Your Eyes, will delight in this CD. There may be a little less of Diana's own piano playing than some fans might like, but the accompaniment, mainly from the London Symphony Orchestra, is flawless. Throughout, the lush strings, arranged by Claus Ogerman, are spiced by the addition of a handful of jazz players among which is Diana's long time musical associate, guitarist Russell Malone. Here and there a gentle touch of Latin percussion is added, bringing a pleasing hint of rhythmic urgency but for the most part this is laid-back, relaxed music making of a very high order. --Bruce Crowther

4.0 out of 5 stars Smooth and Sultry, 15 Jan 2002
This review is from: The Look Of Love (Audio CD)
Everyone who heard the wonderful songs from Diana Krall's last album 'When I look in your eyes' waited in anticipation for her next album. And, earlier this year Ms Krall released 'The Look of Love'. I didn't know what to expect, but I did realise there would be a big change in style as her record label Verve turned Diana from a girl next door jazz pianist/vocalist into a sex symbol and world wide super star.

'The Look of Love' is different from her previous albums. In other Krall albums there has always been a variety of styles from smoochy ballads to up beat swing. Her latest creation, however, contains only slow to medium paced ballads with some interjections of bossa nova. There are no really fast swing numbers here.

This album is stylish and a joy to listen to, perfect for cosy night's in or romantic dinners. The style is cool, laid back easy listening. Diana's band are sturdy, reliable and give the album a good flow. There is also use of an orchestra which does give the album a far more romantic atmosphere than just the trio alone.

Diana's voice is always sultry, sexy and utterly moving. She puts so much feeling into each song that you can not help but be taken by her beautiful velvet voice.

One disapointment of this album is that Diana Krall hardly gets chance to shine with regards to her piano playing. This girl is a superb pianist but there are only one or two piano solos from her on the entire album.

This is probably not an album for hard core jazz fans, as the mood is definately easy listening, and the songs are a mixture of jazzy standards and popular tunes. However, if like me you love to hear beautiful music played by talented artists. If you love to hear a stunning voice and gentle songs, then you will love this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Diana continues with a successful formula, 18 April 2003

This review is from: The Look Of Love (Audio CD)
Following the success of her two previous albums, Love scenes and When I look in your eyes, Diana recorded another album in similar style. It doesn’t quite make the same impact, but that may be due to raised expectations because this is still a high quality album.

Diana has once again selected songs from the Great American Songbook to fill the album, though this time she also has included a sixties song, The look of love, which was a hit for Dusty Springfield, and a fifties song, Cry me a river, which was a hit for Julie London.

S’wonderful was originally a top five American hit in 1928 for the long-forgotten Frank Crumit. Love letters was a hit for its writer, Dick Haymes, in 1946, but only really became popular when Ketty Lester covered it in the sixties and had a huge international hit with it. Elvis Presley and Alison Moyet have also had huge hits with their covers. I remember you is another 1940’s song that waited for the sixties to gain popularity, this time via a Frank Ifield cover.

Diana sings these songs as well as anybody, and also plays piano on all tracks. However, all tracks feature either the London symphony orchestra or the Los Angeles session orchestra, so Diana does not get the chance to show just what she can do with a piano.

This is a wonderful album that confirms Diana as the leading jazz lady in the world today.

3.0 out of 5 stars The CD which finally confirms Diana Krall's MOR crossover., 14 Oct 2001
This review is from: The Look Of Love (Audio CD)
Take any track in isolation and you can't fail but be impressed by the cool sophistication of the voice and the subtle bossanova arrangements. All very stylish and sales will be mega, confirming Diana Krall's graduation from jazz artist to an MOR superstar. Looked at as a complete CD, the Look of Love's late-night Latin mood becomes rather repetitive and may leave those fans who have been following her career for a few years yearning for some of the adventure and rhythmic variety which have characterised earlier efforts. We were turned on by her jazz roots and it is to be hoped that she will return whence she came with future recordings. Incidentally, for those who dig Diana in a more informal setting she does a delightful version of "Let's Get Lost", the title track of a new Sony CD by Terence Blanchard, one of the current top gun jazz trumpeters whose other guests are Dianne Reeves, Cassandra Wilson and Jane Monheit.
