3.0 out of 5 stars Were 10CC normal when they made this?, 9 May 2008
This review is from: Look Hear (Audio CD)
Well...as someone who has been obsessive about 10cc for some 35 years...this album is one of the few that sneaked quietly into my record collection, had a nice cup of tea then nestled somewhere out of sight for a few years. So is it a forgotten masterpiece...well, no.

10cc's strength - Ok, one of many strengths - lies in the incestuous writing partnerships > and even by this time shorn of Lol Creme and Kevin Godley and with the monuments to everlasting brilliance that were Sheet Music and the Original Soundtrack beind them, Eric Stewart and Grahem Gouldman still had enough legs to knock out Deceptive Bends and Bloody Tourists that yielded more than the odd hit single and masterful song. Then the occasional experiment of letting one of the newer (at the time) members of the group write songs, post break-up with G&C, turned into a torrent on Look Hear and...confirmed what fine writers Eric and Graham are.

This album is not entirely a lost cause ... It doesn't matter at all is a fine 10cc song (written by Eric and Grahem, to prove the point...) and songs like Lovers Anonymous and Dressed to kill deserved to be made ... but 125? Don't send we back? LA inflatables? Boys...what WERE you thinking?

So, if you don't know 10cc...do not start here but for someone with a sense of adventure and a knowledge of how good 10cc were before...and indeed after this (why the masses didn't rush out and acquire "ten out of ten" and "Windows in the jungle" is beyond me!)- worth a punt on this one, methinks.

It was about 2 years since "bloody tourists" was released and this was a welcome return to form with all members of the band contributing to the song writing, the single one two five is a great song and should have been a big hit also the follow up single "it doesent matter at all" hails all the trademarks of a 10cc classic, rick fens songs welcome to the world and dont send we back are quite good but my favorites are lovers anonymous and la inflatable sit back and enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Look Hear - Remastered and expanded, 22 April 2010
By
This review is from: Look Hear (Audio CD)
Originally released on 28th March 1980, "Look Hear?" marked the return of 10cc after an eighteen-month hiatus (due partly to Eric Stewart's unfortunate car accident in early January 1979) and was the second (and final) album to feature the six-piece lineup of Eric Stewart, Graham Gouldman, Paul Burgess (Drums), Rick Fenn (Guitar), Stuart Tosh (Drums) and ex-Cockney Rebel keyboards player Duncan Mackay.

One benefit of its re-release in the digital medium is that the remastering gives an added 'sparkle' to what seemed - on vinyl, at least - a 'lacklustre' recording ("Look Hear?" seemed to have a noticeably quiet mix). It seemed to lack obvious singles, although two were extracted - the mock-funk "One Two Five" and "It Doesn't Matter At All" (which adequately showcased Eric Stewart's proven ability with ballads) - without any British chart success. Subsequently "Look Hear?" left a tidemark at no.35 - the group's poorest LP chart placing since 1973.

In typical 10cc form, the featured songs were somewhat eclectic. The majority were written by Eric and Graham - both collectively and apart, with one solo song each - but there were contributions from the newer members. Rick Fenn handled lead vocals on his own "Don't Send We Back" and made two further collaborations. Together with Duncan Mackay, he composed "Welcome To The World" which nodded in a progressive direction and featured alternating lead vocals from Eric and Graham, and also teamed up with Graham for the reggae-influenced "How'm I Ever Gonna Say Goodbye". Gouldman's excellent solo contribution "I Hate To Eat Alone" proved to be one of the highlights of the set. "Lovers Anonymous" and "L.A.Inflatable" were good up-tempo pop songs, Eric supplied another ballad with his solo, melancholy "I Took You Home" but sub-standard material was apparent in "Strange Lover" and the funky "Dressed To Kill".

Overall, this is a welcome reissue of a long-deleted 10cc recording which also benefits from two bonus tracks : the single version of "One Two Five" (which was released as a trailer for the album on 7th March 1980) and its B-side, "Only Child".
