More About the Author

Claire Warden. B.ED Hons, Dip Drama, CEO Mindstretchers Ltd

Claire Warden is an educational consultant who has developed her approach to experiential learning through a variety of experiences. The skills developed as a lecturer in Primary Education at Strathclyde University the development of training strategies and course creation has been applied to the dynamic and creative work undertaken by her company, Mindstretchers. The company has grown to develop many aspects including international training, projects, ethical resources, materials and books written by Claire.

Claire is the founder of a charity called Living Classrooms which is designed to promote the development of Nature Kindergartens, forest schools and naturally creative spaces around the world. The charity has an award system entitled 'Journeys into Nature' to acknowledge increasing awareness and skill level of working in nature. This charity hosts the Forest School Co-ordinator for Scotland.

Mindstretchers set up their first Nature Kindergarten in 2006 as a centre of innovation. This played a key role in promoting the creation of centres across the country since many people visit for inspiration. The two Nature Kindergartens spend up to 90% of their day outdoors in all weathers. In this very naturalistic and highly consultative environment, children from the age of 2-5 yrs have daily prolonged access to the woodland site where they are encouraged to self risk assess, developing independence and confidence. The sites are home to a family forest and forest schools.

Claire is a published author of many books and materials relating to early years methodology and she is the European leader for the Nature Action Collaborative for Children.

Product Description

This is an interaction book designed to support adults in the consultation process about outdoor learning opportunities and how we need to look closely to see nature's beauty. There is a series of 4 books each one with a focus on each of the different seasons. Each section within the book has stunning A4 photographs that gradually take the focus down to the small things that engage children. To support the discussion we have offered some possible Lines of Development for each focus such as mud, grass and movement. This book is great for early years practitioners and teachers. The book suits a wide range of settings both rural and urban. This is also a great book for parents.

Great book, great pictures and lovely ideas. The illustrations are fantastic and the children have loved sharing and discussing them.

I purchased this book for my nursery class and the children went back to it again and again so Ive now bought the full series. The children love looking through the peep holes and at the fabulous photographs of meadows and landscapes. They became curious and prompted us all to really go out and explore our local area - out of the tarmac garden. Its a lovely simple book for all children to look at!

I am clearly in the wrong job!
Having been to a conference given by Claire Warden, I was under the impression that it would be full of ideas for activities for a class, I was extremely disappointed on receiving this book.
I too can take photographs of some lovely scenery. I too can suggest "finding worm casts" or "hugging a tree". I too could instruct the printers to print in swirly lettering with lots (and I mean lots) of space around it.
If you are a primary teacher who already believes in outdoor education you could think of any of these ideas by yourself...and probably already have!
If this is the standard of Mindstretchers books then I think I can guess what their other books might suggest.
Do not bother buying this book.
