I have a log burner built into the lounge which also heats two bedrooms on the upper floor and the attic. Out of several tonnes of logs purchased in the autumn, I still have about three tonnes left because it has been such a bind trying to get it to light using those packets of waxy firelighters so I haven't bothered and have used a butane freestanding fire instead, the disadvantage of this is it puts out loads of condensation.
I was a little doubtful about the Looftlighter because of its price. So far (of course, now that I have it, the weather has turned warmer) I have only used it once and it was FANTASTIC. The fire was alight within 2 minutes and burning merrily within fifteen a state that would normally take an hour or more in the past after it had gone out several times and made its way through half a box of firelighters.
I can only speak for its performance lighting a logburner and cannot make any comments on barbecues although since one doesn't need to resort to any accelerant to get the charcoal burning, I would guess that any food would not get tainted with the byproducts of the accelerant and therefore would taste better.
