More About the Author

Alan MacDonald was born in Watford and now lives a stone's throw from the River Trent in Nottingham. After several years in a travelling theatre company, he turned full time to writing in 1990 since when he has published over seventy books for children.

He has written picture books and non-fiction but is probably best known for his comic fiction for younger readers. Recent successful series include Troll Trouble (Bloomsbury) which was optioned for film by Twentieth Century Fox.

Working with award winning illustrator David Roberts, he created the Dirty Bertie books (featuring the world's grubbiest trouble magnet) - which have sold all over the world and number over a dozen books in the series.

When not busy with books, Alan writes for children's TV, working on many popular series such as Horrid Henry, The Tweenies, Boo! and Fimbles.

Had been looking for something for my son (who's only just 8)to read for pleasure. Up until now he would only read his school reading book and books that I made him read to me- nothing to himself at all. This book has 3 separate stories and each story has about 4 chapters. This makes it manageable for those who don't like to read a lot in one go. My son read a chapter a night to begin with and after only a few nights he had finished a complete story within the book. This gave him the incentive to keep reading. After just a couple of weeks, he's reading a whole book in just a couple of nights.(We ended up buying loads more from the set he liked them so much!) The stories are funny and similar to Horrid Henry in some ways but more interesting and with shorter chapters. Would definitely recommend!

This is one of those books that screams to be read aloud. I got it for my 7 year old and read it to him and in the story of the title 'loo' we were both laughing. The imagery is so clear that any young child can totally put themself in Bertie's shoes - we all know a Bertie! It will never win any literary prizes but great fun! Thoroughly recommend!

I heard a mother reading Bogeys! to her son in my dentist’s waiting room and thought that it might appeal to my six year old grandson. I have now bought him nine Dirty Bertie books and he loves them. He will even pick one up, without any pushing, and read it, in preference to playing with his Lego or trainset or asking to watch television; he relates the stories to others and I have even found him reading to his four year old sister people. I am delighted that they appear to have given him the reading bug and wonder where to go next, once he has finished the whole series.
