I bought Lonji immediately on my return to England after seeing Tcheka at the 20th Africa Festival in Wurzburg having already been familiar with the artist from firstly 'Djan Kre Bejabu' on an fRoots covermount CD and then the whole of the 'Nu Monda' CD. This new CD is a step up in terms of production and ambition. Whilst there is no standout track in the way 'Djan' grabbed you by the ears and took you all the way to that mysterious drum exit the new work has a complex and inviting set of ambient sound and percussion underpinning the fine guitar playing of Tcheka and Hernani Almeida. You can see the direction he is going in and live the addition of a single brass instrument to more than the three tracks on the CD gives each song an aural impact that recalls early Bowie or post-Japan David Sylvain (although Tcheka's voice is more distinctive than either), the astonishing drumkit with a beat-box played with a pedal replacing a bass drum, the tambourines in place of toms and the assortment of embellishments add a dimension you will hear in few other performers. The only reason I have refrained from a five star review is that I am saving this for the next CD, perhaps Cape Verde's 'Dark Side of the Moon'?
