Amazon.co.uk Review
The latest remake of Burt Reynold’s 1974 flick, Adam Sandler’s take on The Longest Yard, is unlikely to win him many new fans. But it has merits as a good, solid, enjoyable comedy, and it finds Sandler himself in very strong form.

The plot sets him as an ex-American footballer, who is sent to prison following a car accident. There, he finds himself putting together a team of convicts to face off against the prison guards, an opportunity that many of the prisoners simply don’t want to pass up. And that pretty much sets the stage for a fast-paced, frequently-funny comedy that doesn’t eclipse the original by any means, but is a worthy testament to it.

Its main strength is its cast. Alongside Sandler himself are a collection of names from the American Football scene, but British audiences are more likely to warm to Chris Rock. He pretty much steals good chunks of the movie from under Sandler’s nose, and some of the film’s finest moments are down to him.

Granted, The Longest Yard hardly sets new ground for comedies, and neither is it the finest laugh-fest of the last few years. But it is fun, it is funny, and for Adam Sandler and Chris Rock fans in particular, it’s a fine way to spend a couple of hours. Worth a spin.--Simon Brew

Synopsis
Director Peter Segal (50 FIRST DATES, ANGER MANAGEMENT) and comedian Adam Sandler are at it again in a fun remake of the 1974 classic, THE LONGEST YARD. In the role of Paul Wrecking Crewe, first immortalised by Burt Reynolds (who appears here as Nate Scarborough), Sandler plays an ex-football star whose career ended amidst allegations of point shaving. Fed up, he drunkenly steals his unfriendly wife's (an uncredited Courtney Cox) luxury car and drives it into a multi-car pileup. This lands Crewe in a cruel Texas state penitentiary. His only respite comes from Warden Hazen (James Cromwell) who wants Crewe to help lead his well-equipped prison-guard football team to the league championship. Crewe timorously agrees, suggesting the creation of an opposing team of convicts to the give the guards an easy tune-up before the season. To the ragtag inmates, this is the chance they've been waiting for, and they hustle to get their team together so they can exact some revenge on the harassing guards. In THE LONGEST YARD, Sandler steps out of the spotlight he enjoyed in films like BILLY MADISON and HAPPY GILMORE and is instead content to let his sizable cast of co-stars shine in the comedic light. Both the guard and the convict teams are infused with solid contributions from a swath of entertaining personalities: ex-football stars Michael Irvin, Bill Romanowski and Brian Bosworth; pro wrestlers Bill Goldberg and Stone-Cold Steve Austin; ESPN anchors Chris Berman and Dan Patrick; and famed rapper Nelly. However, it is Chris Rock, as Crewe's friend Caretaker, whose scenes never fail to steal the show, providing some of the movie's most memorable laughs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow it proves ex/present pro wrestlers can make good actors, 6 Jul 2009
well as re makes of classic films are usually bad (for example The Re-make of A Remake The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) And The Very Poorly made Remake The Next Generation )

this is one of the exception to that rule, the script is solid with a great story line

n this remake to the 1974 sports comedy of the same name, 'The Longest Yard' tells the story of pro quarterback Paul Crewe (Adam Sandler) and former college champion and coach Nate Scarboro (Burt Reynolds), who are both doing time in the same prison. Asked by the sadistic warden (James Cromwell) to put together a team of inmates to take on the guards, Crewe enlists the help of Scarboro to coach the inmates to victory in a football game "fixed" to turn out quite another way.

Bill Goldberg, Kevin Nash And The Great Khali play key roles in this movie

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth watching, 14 Feb 2006
I have never seen the original or Mean Machines, but unlike some of the other reviews I am not going to dwell on it ;-)

I saw this film at the cinema and it definitely exceeded my expectations. It is funny from the outset when our main character, an ex-American Football player (played by Sandler) gets drunk, locks his girlfriend in a closet and takes a spin in her flashy car. He ends up in a Texan prison and the warden, who pulled a few strings to get him there, is keen for help coaching his own team. Before he knows it Sandler is recruitng and training a team of cons to play against the warden's team of prison guards - the idea being that it will be a morale booster for the guards when they win. But of course it doesn't turn out to be the walk in the park that they expected...

The big game is the climax of the film and has some really good moments especially when various prisoners decide to run off in the wrong direction and take out certain guards instead of actually going for the ball. Some of the game tactics are pretty halarious too. The plot goes into more detail than I have but is still quite predictable but that's what you want from an easy going film like this.

A good film. Definitely worth watching.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disregard that last review., 16 Dec 2005
By A Customer
The last review is full of unfounded bitterness based around general ignorance. I've not actually seen this latest Sandler vehicle, but i know for a fact that it is not just "a shameless rip-off" of a British classic. Contrary to what many morons believe, "Mean Machine" starring the oh so wonderful acting talents of Vinnie Jones is not a bastion of gritty British film-making but is in itself a remake of a Burt Reynolds film.

Think before you open your mouth, clown!
