As this series approaches its 400th Eppisode,we are still getting great yarns of The Old West.
This edition is no exception. It is an exciting assignment that Longarm gets from Marshal Billy Vail.Custis has just gotten back to Denver after a grueling assignment, and has just found an interesting companion to enjoy some time with. However Billy feels nobody can even begin to handle this case as well as his top Deputy ,and even promises Longarm a full months vacation on completion of this assignment.Longarm's new found friend even likes less, the idea of Custis taking off;so much so that she insists on accompanying Longarm. This is highly unusual, both Custis and Billy don't like the idea;but the beautiful, and wealthy Heidi Zalstra gets her way.
It is a well constructed stoty, with well developed characters, though not much in the way of historical connotations or Old West descriptions or expressions.
I gave it a 5* Rating which it fully deserves as a great story;but I can't leave it there. The cover really disappointed me.The artwork is actually pretty good, but has nothing at all to do with the story. The story has some great scenes and several interestin and colorful characters that would have made excellent choices for artists to work with.Instead ,what we got is characters that have been on previous covers ,a background scene that looks like northern woods, not the Grand Canyon, and to top it off we get Longarm wearing a winter jacket with a big fur collar and holding a burning torch, when this episode has Longarm in the hot sweltering Grand Canyon.Come on!, when are the publishers going to get some artwork on the covers that reflects the exciting scenes and characters in the stories;not just a collage of "stuff" from the past and which didn't even have anything to do with the episodes then.
So, the storyline deserves 5* while the artwork on the cover deserves 1*,if that.
