A man and a van, a wife and three kids, and their round-the-world road trip as the world's worst Beatles tribute band.

‘I’d convinced her we should travel the world. She imagined posh flights and swanky hotels. Then I said the three words every girl longs to hear: Volkswagen camper van.’

This frank and funny true story of a 'family gap year' like no other shows how the passing comment of a bored 9-year-old can snowball into an absurd expedition into strange lands, financial peril and some distinctly unsavoury living arrangements. With Strawberry Fields New York in their sights, the Beatnik Beatles inadvertently gatecrash an Italian wedding, suffer brutal torture at the hands of a Turkish masseur, appear in a Bollywood film and trust their entire journey across Australia to the whim of an army of online-blog followers - and all to a Lennon & McCartney soundtrack, played badly on instruments bought on eBay.

Got a taste for adventurous travel? Ever felt the peril of performing in public? Tried to entertain children on a very, very long car journey? Great! Do you want to join a band?

‘It’s a dirty story of a dirty man.’
Paul McCartney

‘Please stop calling us.’

‘We do not condone absenteeism on this scale.’

More About the Author

Simeon Courtie left school to become a mechanical engineer, only to find he didn't enjoy it very much. 'Just give it another month or 2,' his parents would preach until, 4 years later, he completed his apprenticeship at Timsons, a printing press manufacturer, swapped his spanner for a microphone and began a broadcasting career at BBC Radio Northampton. This flourished into a TV job as a Childrenʼs BBC presenter presenting live on BBC1 with a puppet aardvark sidekick. After fronting several high profile peak-time childrenʼs shows on both BBC and ITV he moved behind the camera to write formats and comedy scripts.

In 2010 he persuaded his wife and 3 daughters to join him on an epic quest, driving a VW camper van around the world and busking The Beatles for charity as they went. Their incredible story is told in Simeon's first book, 'The Long and Whining Road', Grand Prize Winner of the London Book Festival 2012.

He lives in Oxfordshire and presents several radio shows for both BBC local radio and the forces radio station BFBS.

5.0 out of 5 stars TRULY INSPIRING 30 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
There are not many books that keep me up till the early hours of the morning but this is one. A truly inspiring story that takes you on an incredible journey around the world in a camper van. There is a a real need to see what sort of adventure would face the family next as they traversed the globe on nothing but wit and charm. Full of great stories of the people they meet on the way as well as many scary encounters. If you want a book to read that will inspire you to do something that you wouldnt have thought about doing, no matter how big or small, then this is the book for you! Read it! You will not be disappointed!!

What a great read! This was the fascinating, `couldn't put it down' story of a family of five travelling around the world together in the close quarters of a VW camper van and the adventures they had on the way. I have read everything ever written by Bill Bryson and love travel stories, and this was easily in the same class as a humorous and educational tale, but also managed to be extremely moving and thought-provoking at the same time. I took this book into every room in the house with me in case I had the chance to read a few more pages and was very sad when I came to the end. I am hoping there will be more books by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational and unputdownable 6 Aug 2012
The only problem I had reading this book was making sure that I took it with me wherever I went. It is very hard to put down.

Simeon's writing style is free-flowing, honest and very funny.

I had to explain to my family what I had just read after laughing out loud on several occasions.

I thoroughly recommend you follow the fab six ( the vw camper van included) on their journey across the globe. You will not regret it.

The only way I can think of thanking the author is to make a personal donation to the work of UNICEF - that inspired their trip.

5.0 out of 5 stars The long road kept me interested to the end 28 Feb 2013
By Bike Dr
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I don't read that many books as I get bored far to easy, but found this one a very enjoyable read and got to the end. it left me wishing I was brave enough to pack it all in, and go off touring the world in my camper. It's also amazing the trust some people have in total strangers on their journey.
Sim had me in tears with his thumb story, why do we laugh at others misfortunes??

4.0 out of 5 stars This will definately get you laughing 25 Feb 2013

Very entertaining and as campers, oh have we been there...good insight to countries we have not yet visited and even ones to avoid possibly. So funny in places, could not put it down, if you own a caravan or a camper van, then you will really appreciate this and laugh at the pitfalls and the highs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a single whine from this reader 22 Feb 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If I still wore a hat, I would take it off to this family who were adventurous enough to grab life and emerge at the end even closer than they may have been at the start.
As someone who can look back on holidays abroad with two youngsters in a VW motor caravan I know what demands can be placed on relationships in a combined space.
A great read and I am sure that the children will look back on their experience with many happy memories. Interesting, too, to learn of the support received from the teaching staff at the children's school and that the children's education had not suffered as a result of the time away from formal schooling.
Liked the contribution in the form of the video at the end of the read acknowledging the assistance provided by those who had supported the family in various ways.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book 21 Feb 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I found the story of this family touring the world really interesting and it was very well written with some nice comedy thrown in. I really had trouble putting it down and when I did couldn't wait to pick it up again. I enjoy reading travelogue type books and would regard this as one of the best.

Loved this book from start to finish. It was an inspiring story which gave me lots of travel ideas for when my husband finally wears me down and buys a camper van! Loved the humour in it and also the honesty when it wasn't always roses.
