Scary bananas!!,

This review is from: The Long Weekend (Paperback)
I bought this book for my 13 year old, but read it myself first, just to check it was suitable. I would recommend other parents do the same, as it will really scare some kids. You'll know whether your son or daughter is ready yet.
Having said that, quite honestly this is the book that every teenager SHOULD read. It pulls no punches when it comes to what this creep intends for these kids - and I feel that by the time they're teenagers, they need to know this. Just a moment of carelessness, of 'going with the flow' because that's what your mates are doing, or not checking because you assume someone else is, and anyone could find themselves in this kind of situation. Then there's the thriller aspect, the chase. OMG, it was seat-of-the-pants stuff! I couldn't sleep until I finished it - and neither could my daughter. We were completely gripped! I think this book is a real rite-of-passage read for young people who are hitting their teenage years. It's not suitable for younger kids, but the issues are definitely ones that older kids/younger adults should be confronting. 10 out of 10.

Unputdownable!,

This is one of my favourite books from last year. It is an intensely compelling thriller from new writer Savita Kalhan. I read it in one sitting, only disappearing off for a cup of tea when the tension became too much.
This is a novel that really seizes your interest. It is a classic page turner, not just because of the action but because the protagonists are so well drawn, you just have to see what happens to them. Sam has never faced such a challenge and the impelling factor in the book is whether he can meet it. Kalhan creates an atmosphere of claustrophobia and suspense with deceptively simple and elegant writing. She addresses the issue of stranger danger thoughtfully and realistically, while also maintaining an eye to the everyday issue of finding your place in the pecking order, that concerns every teenager. The denouement was unexpected and incredibly satisfying...but I can't say more I don't want to spoil it! Read it for yourself.

Absolutely gripping,

I picked this book up yesterday evening, meaning to skim the first page (as I'm currently halfway through something else). By the end of the first chapter I was completely hooked. It's an overused phrase, I know, but this book really is the definition of a pageturner. I read it in one sitting.
It's about two friends who have only known each other a short time (this being crucial to the situation they find themselves in) and what happens to them after an error of judgement sees them abducted. What follows is truly terrifying, and I can really say that I haven't been this compelled by a book for a long time. The characters of Sam and Lloyd are really interesting in the way that one of them takes control, and the other falls apart. It makes you question what you would do in such a situation. The story is dark and disturbing without being graphic or explicit, in fact it's the unsaid things left to your imagination that make it so creepy - the author does this extremely well. It is also very touching in places - you really want these kids to come through the nightmare and be all right. You're desperate for it, which makes this such a compelling read. The story gets straight to the point, and at 180 pages, it's a snappy read. I'd recommend this to readers of 12 and up, and think it would definitely be one for reluctant readers as it's so fast-moving and exciting. If you're a fan of books like Looking for JJ or Stone Cold (Puffin Teenage Fiction)you won't want to miss this.
